AVP for Human Resources PLEASE NOTE SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLICANTS


Job Description:
The successful candidate is a strategic and thoughtful relationship builder, a change-agent and collaborator, and a driven leader. The AVP excels at leading and managing campus culture change within a context of an excellent liberal arts college, and executing a progressive HR strategy to build a service and solutions focused range of HR capabilities. With senior leadership, the AVP will translate the Furman Advantage into forward-thinking HR operational plans. The successful candidate will also:

  • Provide strategic leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of quality-based, integrated human resource programs and services;
  • Collaborate with constituents at all levels of the institution to translate the goals and initiatives of the University into human resource strategic and operational plans;
  • Build, motivate, and retain a strong, result-oriented, and respected team within the Office of Human Resources department that is proactive, operationally excellent, and viewed by the University to be collaborative, supportive, efficient, and innovative;
  • Provide transformational leadership with a focus on building a customer service-oriented HR infrastructure that best serves the needs of a wide variety of university constituents;
  • Provide strategic consultation and guidance to all levels of administration, faculty, and staff concerning human resources matters with a high degree of confidentiality, integrity, ethics, initiative, and sound judgement;
  • Demonstrate a robust understanding of HR best practices and trends;
  • Create better processes and capabilities;
  • Lead strategic, organization-wide change initiatives in a manner consistent with organizational culture and values;
  • Demonstrate commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion and develop programs to allow the organization to support and promote diversity in our employees;
  • Ensure compliance with COBRA, FLSA, ADA, FMLA, ERISA, immigration laws, and all other applicable federal, state, and local regulations governing employment;
  • Develop human resource planning models to identify competency, knowledge, and talent gaps and develop specific programs to fill the identified gaps;
  • Develop appropriate policies and programs for effective management of the people resources of the organization;
  • Work closely with the University's General Counsel, Police Department, Title IX office, senior administrators, and faculty governance structure to create and enhance policies and evaluate any potential risks for the university such as terminations of employment;
  • Manage the budget and other financial measures of the HR department;
  • Continue to improve the programs, policies, practices, and processes associated with meeting the strategic and operational matters of the organization; and
  • Review and streamline processes to ensure the delivery of high-quality services that contribute to employee productivity.
  • Provide impeccable integrity and a reputation for a balanced, consultative approach;
  • Manage resources, human and financial, to maximize productivity and ensure work of the highest quality;
  • Understand data collection methodology and analysis that will support data-informed decision-making;

Additional background requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in a related field; advanced degree and an HR certification is strongly preferred; and
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience leading relevant functions within a human resource department in an institution of higher education or a comparably complex setting.
