The Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University is seeking a Human Resources Manager 1 to provide comprehensive human resources services for the second largest department in the School of Medicine. This position will work under general supervision in all areas of general human resources, interacting with a diverse group of individuals in an active, fast-paced, and challenging environment.

The Department of Pediatrics is dedicated to excellence in clinical care, education, research and administration. The Department is a dynamic, stimulating place to work and because we are focused on growth and improved excellence, our staff have particularly challenging and rewarding roles. With more than 700 pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists across the Bay Area and more than 400 operational, program specialist and research staff, our department is one of the largest at the School of Medicine.

The HR Manager will be responsible for helping to guide our talent acquisition program, provide performance management guidance to employees and supervisors and provide analytical support to Department leadership. The ideal candidate will have a record of progressive responsibility in Human Resources, experience leading Human Resources staff and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: 1) overseeing and developing recruitment strategies for staff positions - including analyzing and reducing time-to-fill metrics; 2) collaborating with hiring managers to identify and develop Job Information Forms (JIFs) - including explanation of employment laws, policies and procedures; and 3) providing guidance to managers during various processes (e.g. salary planning, performance management, leave of absence, etc.).

The HR Manager must possess and demonstrate a positive outlook on continuous process improvement efforts while maintaining a team-based and customer-focused mindset. It is critical that this position exhibit the abilities to practice sound judgment and decision-making, effective written & oral communication, respectful relationship management, and selflessness. This position must also exhibit a strong desire to continuously learn new and unfamiliar business topics, policies and procedures as they relate to HR functions - the ability to translate this information into operational successes will be critical. The Department of Pediatrics HR team regularly engages in conversations, ideas and initiatives to help benefit those that we serve - the HR Manager must be able to understand, develop and practice a servant leadership philosophy.

Duties include:

  • Collaborate with the organization's management and/or human resources team to support initiatives by understanding the organization's issues and needs. Participate in planning processes and promote best practices.
  • Assist in the implementation of strategies for facilitating organizational and behavioral change. Participate on organizational design and related development issues.
  • Investigate basic employee relations issues and recommend appropriate resolution; work in consultation with more senior level human resources manager/director to resolve complex issues. Coach and advise on organizational, employee, and labor relations issues.
  • Assist in overseeing the performance appraisal process; ensure the appropriate process is followed.
  • Assist hiring managers in talent management (recruitment and staffing plans).
  • Administer area's salary-setting program to meet the organization and university's guidelines. Advise managers on assignment of employees to appropriate classification levels; review and approve salary actions, as needed. Consult with manager and/or human resources director or university compensation on complex issues.
  • Identify, communicate, and consult with staff on training and career development opportunities. Conduct relevant training, and participate in training design, as needed.
  • Oversee processes for workers' compensation, disability, leave, work place accommodation requests, and health and safety issues; consult with managers, senior human resources manager or director, as needed. Oversee the accurate documentation and recordkeeping.
  • Oversee and/or approve human resources transactions submitted for processing. Ensure accurate and timely recordkeeping practices. Prepare reports, and analyze data available through local and centralized database resources.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in business, human resources or other applicable field of study desired.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Stanford University experience.

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

    Bachelor's degree and three years relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in at least two human resources areas, including: employee relations, employment and labor law, compensation, staffing and employment, training and development, performance coaching and management, and organizational development.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and understanding of group dynamics. Successful track record of establishing credibility and trust with a diverse client group.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem solving, judgment, and influencing skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare clear and concise reports and deliver formal presentations or training.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite and human resource information systems.

    CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:

    Human Resources certification (e.g. PHR, SHRM-CP, etc.) or successful completion of certification within one (1) year from date of hire required.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a computer; use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally reach/work above shoulders, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, write by hand, sort/file paperwork.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, operate foot and/or hand controls.
