Title:                               Assistant/Associate Professor of Physiology


Classification:                Faculty; 1.0 FTE Full Time, Exempt


Supervisor:                    Chair, Department of Basic Sciences


Education:                    MD, PhD, or Equivalent


Salary Range:                $85,000 - $180, 000 annually depending on classification            


Position Description:


The Physiology faculty member is a non-tenured position responsible for the education in Pre-doctoral didactic and/or translational educational programs. This position participates and assists the Department Chair and faculty colleagues in the planning, directing, and implementation of college of medicine programs and assists in the development and teaching of curricula that integrates the different specialty areas in a team-based, large and small group learning environments.

The responsibilities for this position will include all of the following:  serving the academic mission of the Department in teaching medical students, performing scholarly activities, and providing institutional service.  In addition, other responsibilities may include student advising, student recruitment, retention, and placement efforts.

  Obligations of the Assistant/Associate Professor:

  1. Develop and implement curriculum topics for an integrated medical program
  2. Design a progressive format of medical science presentations, framed within the clinical context of the integrated curriculum
  3. Collaborate with basic and clinical science educators to coordinate the integration, horizontally and vertically, of basic sciences within organ/system-based courses
  4. Design and implement appropriate laboratory experiences for medical students in an integrated curriculum
  5. Teach first and second year medical students
  6. Lead a systems-based course (if assigned)
  7. Support student remediation planning and activities
  8. Design/deliver outstanding student experience, attending to all curriculum matters, as well as maintaining a learning environment that promotes mutual respect and professional behavior on the part of faculty, staff and students
  9. Provide course schedules, syllabi, and information for educational database
  10. Serve as a College Master (student mentor, academic advisor and role model), and supervise the academic progress of an assigned group of students throughout their medical program (if assigned)
  11. Support the delivery of the Masters Colloquium and Medical Skills courses for pre-clerkship students (as assigned)
  12. Support student career advising and student medical specialty interest groups (if assigned)
  13. Participate in scholarly activities and/or research
  14. Participate in faculty development programs
  15. Serve on departmental and institutional committees


  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills (e.g., with students, faculty, etc.)
  • Commitment to professional excellence
  • Terminal degree (PhD, MD, MD/PhD, DO, SeD, etc.)
  • Experience in teaching Systems Physiology at the medical school level will be strongly preferred
  • Experience in teaching in an integrated curriculum will be preferred
  • Ability to work effectively in an inter-disciplinary environment

Criteria for Appointment:

  • MD, PhD, or EdD
  • A substantial record of success as an educator with experience in teaching foundational concepts which are relevant to medical education. Preferred candidates shall have teaching experience in an academic setting.
  • Knowledge of instructional technologies is desirable.
  • Experience with curricular and instructional design and training or experience in educational theory and/or evaluation preferred.
  • Experience using innovative teaching methods which might include team-based learning, problem-based learning, interactive large group presentation, audience response systems, and curriculum delivery systems.
  • A history of exceptional scholarly, professional and/or individual achievement
