DESCRIPTION

The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego Health System plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture at UC San Diego that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the expansion/development of a student health and well-being center, and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).

SHS provides primary medical care, including urgent care and support services such as laboratory, pharmacy, and x-ray to over 38,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. SHS staff consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, pharmacists, x-ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistants, optometrists, medical assistants, health educators, administrative and other healthcare professionals.

Under the general supervision of the Student Health Service (SHS) Insurance Manager, this position serve as a Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) liaison between students and their covered dependents, the plan administrator and healthcare providers. Communicate and coordinate plan information such as eligibility and benefits. Provide guidance on SHIP claim process. Provide education to students on reconciling insurance statements and bills from non-SHS providers. Communicate and coordinate enrollment process for voluntary SHIP coverage for students and their dependents.

Process, transmit and maintain SHIP eligibility rosters, including analysis of eligibility reports, statistics and files. Gather and analyze SHIP utilization reports based on information from a variety of sources, including the health plan, third party administrators and SHS. Provide findings and recommendations to Supervisor. Coordinate interactions with other campus departments, preparing informational material and conducting information/orientation sessions. Process the SHIP Health Fee Waiver applications, including waiver updates.

Prepare and process SHS transactions for billing to insurance plan and students. Receive and process insurance payments. Monitor and reconcile open SHS charges. Submit disbursement requests for vendor invoices. Provide administrative support, including preparing and reviewing correspondence, reports, minutes, presentations and forms using word processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation, and E-mail software. Assist with training and daily oversight of insurance coordinators. Facilitate and assist with special insurance related projects. Understand and apply medical and insurance terminology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical and insurance terminology.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of insurance claims processing and interpreting explanation of benefits.

  • Proven ability to understand, interpret and follow requirements of contracts, policies and procedures.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, including knowledge of proper business formats, grammar, spelling and punctuation.

  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to answer telephone calls and impart accurate and timely information in a courteous, friendly and professional manner.

  • Proficiency using word processing, database, calendar, spreadsheet, email, and Web based software. Skill to use (some or all) Microsoft Exchange, Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and other software and Web based functions.

  • Strong keyboard skills, including typing, word processing and 10 key calculator. Skill in the use of other standard office machines.

  • Solid organizational and time management skills. Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. Ability to take responsibility for assignment and see it through to completion with little or no supervision. Ability to work efficiently, keeping track of many diverse tasks and varying assignments.

  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor during interactions with a wide variety of personalities in demanding situations. At all times, demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others; uphold the UCSD Principles of Community and promote a positive and collaborative team environment.

  • Skill to work as part of a team, carrying out any assignments. Ability to work with a variety of individuals in a pleasant and courteous manner. Strong problem solving skills and ability to use sound judgment. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • EPIC experience.
  • UCSD revenue cycle experience.
  • Knowledge of federal HIPAA and FERPA regulations and state health insurance laws.
  • Knowledge of UCSD and Student Health Service policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use ISIS and other UCSD online information systems.
  • Knowledge of basic bookkeeping and accounting principles and ability to understand and work with general and UCSD accounting reports.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must complete initial mandatory health requirements, and current clear TB test results and flu vaccination. In the absence of immunization records, titer test or blood test will be required to determine if other immunizations are needed.
  • TB screening and flu vaccinations are required annually.
