The Domain Science Programmer/IT Specialist applies advanced computational, computer science, data science, and Cyberinfrastructure (CI) software research and development principles, with relevant domain science knowledge where applicable, to perform highly complex research, technology and software development which involve in-depth evaluation of variable factors impacting medium to large projects of broad scope and complexities. Designs, develops, and optimizes components and tools for major numerical modeling, HPC, data science, and CI projects. Resolves complex research and technology development and integration issues. Gives technical presentations to associated research and technology groups and management.
Evaluates new hardware and software technologies for advancing complex, HPC, numerical modeling, data science, and CI projects. Represents the organization as part of a team at national and international meetings, conferences and committees. Assists in the design, implementation and recommends new hardware and software technologies for advancing complex HPC, numerical modeling, data science, and CI projects. Leads a team of research and technical staff. This person will manage internal servers, code/data management and curation, as well as act as a liaison between Scripps IT and CW3E.
This position will serve as a technical lead in the research, design, development and implementation of applications, HPC modeling, highly complex workflows over multiple platforms and data curation/provenance capabilities focused on extreme weather and climate events in the Western US within CW3E. This person will advise CW3E Management team of concerns and provide solutions as it is related to external HPC, internal servers, data and code management, complex software implementation and best practices as it relates to computing.
In addition, the position will coordinate technical efforts across multiple CW3E partner institutions: Army Core of Engineers, California Nevada River Forecast Center, NOAA, Sonoma Water, and other partners at Universities and agencies. Provide technical leadership to management in the recommendation of new hardware and software technologies both locally, at national HPC centers, and in the cloud for current and future CW3E center-wide activities.
The position will require extensive experience with HPC computation, numerical modeling, data curation and provenance, and highly complex workflows over multiple platforms to assist with CW3E's Near Real Time (NRT) West-WRF guidance system for AR recon and Forecast Informed Reservoir Operations (FIRO), new forecasting tools, and operations initiatives. Furthers UCSD educational goal by teaching next generation undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students best practices and techniques developed within CW3E for new research and applications capabilities focused on extreme weather and climate events in the Western US.QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's Degree in Computer/Computational/Data Science, or Domain Sciences/Mathematics with computer/computational/data specialization or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's Degree preferred.
Advanced knowledge of HPC, data science, and CI. Experience with porting and running HPC domain specific scientific software and the related packages and working with domain science experts. Demonstrated knowledge of compiling and running MPI based code.
Proven experience working in a complex computing/data/CI environment encompassing all or some of the following: HPC, data science infrastructure and tools/software, and diverse domain science application base. Advance experience with code curation, code management and work flows. Advance experience dealing with large data sets, multiple data formats and meta-data.
Highly advanced skills, and experience associated with one or more of the following: HPC hardware and software power and performance analysis and research, design, modification, implementation and deployment of HPC or data science or CI applications and tools of large-scale scope. Experience with designing and working on complicated workflows.
Demonstrated advanced experience in one or more of the following: optimizing, benchmarking, HPC performance and power modeling, analyzing hardware, software, and applications for HPC/data/CI.
In-depth skills and experience in resolving complex computing/data/CI problems using introductory and/or intermediate principles. Advanced ability to think creatively to recommend action steps or strategize solutions.
Demonstrated experience with national labs HPC resources.
Knowledge of other areas of IT. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Knowledge of basic computer hardware design and chip technology.
In-depth experience assessing a broad spectrum of technical and research needs and demands and establish priorities, delegating and/or leading development of solutions to meet such needs.
In-depth ability to successfully work and/or lead multiple concurrent projects. Demonstrated research and technology project leadership and management skills.
Strong ability to regularly, effectively communicate with unit-level management. Ability to effectively communicate with external partners, SIO IT, UCSD IT and San Diego Super Computing Center.
Excellent ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization and to external research and education audiences. Demonstrated ability to write clear and concise documentation.
Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Proven problem-solving skills. Proven ability to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
