Part-Time Close All Job SummaryThe University of Colorado Museum of Natural History is welcoming applications for an after-school Girls Science Program Coordinator who will responsible for all aspects of delivering the Girls At the Museum Exploring Science (GAMES) program. The GAMES program has been in existence for over 17 years and is a program that encourages interest and excitement about science in preadolescent girls from underserved communities. The program consists of six weekly after-school visits to the CU Museum of Natural History. While at the museum, the girls explore natural sciences through hands-on activity and direct interaction with scientists. Each program concludes with an evening family visit to the museum. GAMES also has a summer program for middle school girls. Participants spend a week with museum scientists and science educators - exploring collections, manipulating museum specimens, practicing field work and developing small exhibits based on their experiences. Who We AreThe University of Colorado Museum fosters exploration and appreciation of the natural environment and human cultures through research, teaching, and community outreach. We provide academic training for graduate students in Museum and Field Studies; build, conserve, and interpret research collections; and offer exhibits and educational programs for the University and the public. What Your Key Responsibilities Will BeProgram Implementation

• Prep for programs each week with help from work-study students.
• Present programs each week that GAMES is in program.
• Implement summer middle school program.

Maintain and Build Community Connections

• Recruit participants.
• Develop recruitment email; send and follow-up.
• Meet in person with school personnel if a new contact.
• Recruit and train CU students – graduate and undergrad work study to support each meeting.
• Coordinate family visit for final week.
• Prepare information for parents to take home
• SCFD free days at regional museums.
• Handouts on encouraging girls in science.
• Ways to stay connected with the museum.
• Develop and distribute monthly GAMES newsletter.
• translate into Spanish.
• Send out formal “Thank yous” to everyone who supported the programs.

Logistics

• Develop schedule for each 6-week program.
• Arrange for transportation between school and the museum.
• Purchase supplies for tool kits and ancillary activities.
• Purchase snacks for upcoming meetings.
• Arrange to pay chaperons’ honoraria.
• Plan and coordinate summer program for middle school girls.

Curriculum Development

• Update curriculum for existing content areas (5-10 hours per topic per year).
• Develop curriculum for new content areas.

Evaluation

• Conduct pre- and post-visit surveys for participants.
• Survey for parents.
• Survey/interview with chaperons.
• (survey scientists).

Write grants/reports

• Generate reports required by funders.
• Continue established relationship with CU Office of Outreach and Engagement for funding and press coverage.
• Research and obtain possible external funding in collaboration with GAMES faculty PI and other engaged museum staff.

What You Should KnowThe academic year program is typically held on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoon from 3:00-5:15pm. Three sessions per semester; up to 15 girls per session. The summer middle school programs are for one week, from 10:00am-2:00pm. There are two summer sessions, up to 12 girls per session.
The hours worked will not be distributed evenly across the year; more time is required when GAMES is in session and fewer when it is not. Compensation is hourly; paid as work is done. Telecommuting for non-contact time is a possibility.
What We Can OfferPosition will pay $20 per hour; variable hours throughout the year; part-time - 25% time; This will be a 12 month assignment with the possibility of becoming a permanent (part-time) Museum position. The position is not eligible for benefits. Benefits

• Masters’ Degree with a major in science or education.
• 3 years’ experience in science education in a formal or informal setting.

What We Would Like You To Have

• Fluent in Spanish – spoken and written.
• Experience in a scientific research lab.
