The Department of Biological Sciences is dedicated to research and teaching in a broad range of aspects of the biological sciences. We have strong undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral programs, with substantial extramural support to develop and maintain integrative research programs. The Life Sciences First Year Program is committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all incoming first-year students in the life sciences.

Essential Job Duties

This full time professional (non-tenure) track teaching faculty position (12-month) will serve as Director of the Life Sciences First Year (LSFY) Program (approximately 50% time) and will have teaching responsibilities (approximately 50%).

LSFY serves incoming first-year students (currently about 600 per year) interested in studying the life sciences at NC State, and includes six primary-role academic advisors dedicated to advising LSFY students until they move into their major degree programs. LSFY programming includes proactive advising, new student orientation, peer mentoring, outreach events, and recruitment events.

The Director of LSFY has broad leadership responsibility for LSFY, in consultation with a faculty advisory committee consisting of the undergraduate program directors of participating majors. The LSFY Director serves as a representative of, and voice for, the LSFY Program and its students, advisors, and faculty across campus and beyond.

Specific teaching responsibilities will include several sections of first-year students in LSC 101 Critical and Creative Thinking in the Life Sciences (primarily in Fall), as well as some departmental teaching (in Spring). Departmental teaching will be determined by the Department Head, based on the candidate’s interests and expertise as well as departmental needs.

The successful applicant can expect an initial contract of three years, with subsequent renewals up to five years in length.

The position is contingent upon UNC System Office approval

Other Work/Responsibilities

Occasional night and weekend work is required, including at outreach and recruitment events.

Minimum Education/Experience

Requires doctor’s degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience, or master’s degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.

Departmental Required Skills

College-level teaching experience

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

PhD in life sciences or related discipline and at least two years of college advising and teaching experience, with primary responsibility for courses, are required. Experience teaching and advising first-year college students at a four-year university is preferred. Also preferred is experience with one or more of the following: course and curriculum development, undergraduate program oversight, program assessment, and higher education administration.
