About the College/Unit/Department

In 2018, The UGA Tifton Campus began a yearlong Centennial celebration with various events to commemorate its 100th anniversary of providing updated research to the community.

Research is done on a wide range of commodities, including cotton, peanuts, vegetables and turf grass, all of which make agriculture the No. 1 industry in Georgia.

In 2004, a teaching program was initiated and it has been growing ever since. College-level instruction on campus is aimed at undergraduate and graduate-degree level study.

This position is located in Tifton, GA, which is approximately 200 miles southwest of Athens, Georgia, 200 miles south of Atlanta, GA and approximately 70 miles north of the Florida line.

Preferred QualificationsPosition Summary

This is a technical support position involved in the design, management, and implementation of field plots for the Extension Vegetable Entomologist based on the UGA Tifton Campus. The successful candidate’s primary responsibility will be supervision of field research efforts in vegetable insect management. This includes operating, transporting, and maintaining farm and research equipment, supervision of experiments both on-farm and on-station, applying experimental treatments, recording data, keeping crop management records and supervision of support staff. The successful candidate will have to learn to identify all stages of common insects found on vegetables. Troubleshooting crop management problems and decision-making are expected. Support for additional research projects conducted by the Vegetable Team is expected.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Knowledge of vegetable farming practices and equipment use and operation is essential. Must be able to effectively communicate with supervisors and employees. The position will supervise part-time employees and student workers.

Duties/Responsibilities

Supervision of experiments, both on-station and on-farm. This will include preparation of field plots (roto-tilling, fertilizing, herbicide application, laying plastic and drip tape, etc.), planting/transplanting, irrigation, weed control, disease control, maintenance sprays, harvest and destruction of the crop when finished. Will aid in application of experimental treatments. Will supervise support staff in conducting these duties.

Operating, transporting and maintaining farm and research equipment. Will be responsible for maintenance of tractors, trucks, sprays, and other equipment used in research and travel. Minor maintenance will be done by the technician. Major maintenance will be contracted under the supervision of the technician.

The technician will participate in and supervise student works in collection of field data including insect counts, damage ratings, yield, and other data as specified.
