Position Information

Minimum Qualifications should list both the minimum degree and the field which the degree must be earned. If prior work experience is required, the posting should list both the job in which the experience must be gained, and the minimum duration that will be accepted.

Classification TitlePost-Doctoral Associate ADFLSAExemptUGA Job CodeJob FamilyFTE1.0Minimum QualificationsPosition Summary

The postdoctoral research associate will work on a DOE funded project to develop a suite of linkage specific enzymes that can be used in concert to gain in-depth understanding of how the structure of rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I) contributes to its biological functions, and more importantly, provides a rich knowledgebase for enzyme bioprospecting in existing sequence datasets. The candidate will be leading efforts to determine biocatalytic activities of recombinant enzymes and their saccharide products using state of the art physical and spectroscopic techniques, including HPLC, MALDI-TOF MS, 1H-NMR, and ESI-MS. He/she will generate a library of well-characterized RG-I polymers and oligosaccharides for use in structural and biosynthetic studies in collaboration with other Co-PIs and Key Personel supported by this project. Specifically, the enzyme library generated by the candidate will be used to prepare specifically modified and well-defined RG-I oligosaccharides in amounts sufficient for structural studies by 1H-NMR and MS, and as standards for use in development of new, highly sensitive capillary electrophoresis (CE) and electron-transfer dissociation (ETD) tandem MS techniques for pectin fingerprinting. These techniques will also be applied towards the analysis of enzymes involved in RG-I biosynthesis. He/she will also be expected to prepare oral or written reports, write manuscripts, and maintain concise records of the research carried out as part of this project. Some travel may be required.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position

A Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, plant biology or a related discipline. Preference will be given to candidates who have hands-on experience with structural analyses of complex glycans and heterologous expression and purification of recombinant proteins. Previous experience in characterization of enzymes involved in polysaccharide biosynthesis and deconstruction is encouraged. Strong communication skills and fluency in written and spoken English are essential as is the ability to work in a collaborative scientific environment.
