Overview

The Accommodations Coordinator facilitates disability needs assessment and arrangement of accommodations for undergraduate and graduate students with sensory, physical, medical and temporary disabilities within the Office of Disability Services. This individual is responsible for managing and arranging assistive technology for students and addressing print and technological accessibility needs for the office and AccessAbility Center. The Accommodations Coordinator participates in planning and implementing programming for the AccessAbility Center including disability awareness initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a current and working knowledge of assistive technology and train students on use of technologies such as Dragon Naturally speaking, Livescribe smart pen, text-to-speech software. Research and purchase new equipment, technologies and software.
  • Problem-solve issues with assistive technology and collaborate with Office of Information Technology staff to support technology needs.
  • Work with Undergraduate and Graduate students with physical, sensory, medical and temporary impairments to assess accommodation needs and resolve course and classroom access issues.
  • Hire and manage American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters and CART (Communication Access Real-Time Translation) providers or other professionals and assist ODS Office Administrator in hiring student workers serving as notetakers, scribes, readers, etc.
  • Interact with faculty or administrators to educate and implement accommodations including set up of remote CART, on-site CART and ASL.
  • Coordinate document conversion to braille and create accessible electronic text.
  • Manage inventory of technological devices, equipment and software used for student accommodations.
  • Research and purchase new equipment, technologies and software.
  • Develop, edit and maintain Office of Disability Services and AccessAbility Center website using Drupal platform.
  • Create training modules and supports for student workers.
  • Provide back-up for the Office Administrator answering telephones and greeting students and visitors.
  • Support office as needed, including Commencement events, and participate in programming for the AccessAbility Center.
Qualifications

 

Required: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Experience with assistive technologies including the ability to resolve issues; ability to train students on use of assistive technologies.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities, especially sensory and physical, in an educational setting.
  • Experience arranging and implementing accommodations for students such as accessible course materials, sign language interpreters, CART providers, and student workers.
  • Strong verbal and written interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a range of constituencies including faculty and administrators.
  • Ability to relate to individuals of diverse abilities and backgrounds.
  • Strong time management, organizational and planning skills with the ability to prioritize, and manage competing priorities.
  • Strong commitment to confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Understanding of ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Preferred: 

  • 2 or more years’ experience working in a higher education disability services office.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Windows 10, Apple OS10.x operating systems, Google docs, Microsoft Exchange and Outlook and understanding of programs such as PeopleSoft, Onbase, Sharepoint and time collection. 
  • Experience assessing building and classroom access.
