DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Bio scientist independently performs postdoctoral level to work in developing and design new noninvasive Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) probes for gene/cell therapy at the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine. The incumbent will be responsible for carrying molecular biology techniques to improve current MRI probes by using specialized technical knowledge.

The Research Associate will also be responsible for conducting MR imaging studies with live animals with two cutting edge imaging systems: 9.4T system (5/10 mm bore, Bruker AscendTM 400) as well as rodent high field 11.7T system (10 cm bore, Bruker console).

The Research Associate will be participating in several ongoing research projects involving the development of cell tracking probes and methods using multi-nuclear MR in both animals and humans and collaborate with biologically-oriented investigators. Contributes to manuscripts and scientific articles suitable for publication in scientific journals, including editing technical sections of the paper.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge in physics, biochemistry, engineering, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. PhD preferred.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in molecular and cellular biology. Experience with Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), gene knockout and over-expression, western-blotting, RT-PCR, and cell culture of mammalian immune cells and neural stem cells.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with grant policy and procedures. Demonstrated experience assisting with grant budget development and revisions. Demonstrated success and skill at researching, analyzing, and evaluating information for preparation of grant proposals

  • Ability to effectively document complex research procedures, accurately record experimental details and results, perform mathematical calculations necessary for data analysis, prepare graphs and figures to summarize results and write reports.

  • Strong word processing and database skills. Experience with computer software applications such as MNova, EndNote, and Microsoft Office. Experience to collect, reduce, and analyze data.

  • Skills and experience with digital image manipulation software such as Amira

  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory data management and record keeping using laboratory notebooks, spreadsheets and databases.

  • Demonstrated experience with library and internet literature searches, scientific reading of articles and manuscripts.

  • Proven ability to contribute to original project development ideas, experimental design and strategies, as well as their implementation into a variety of research projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, take ownership of work performance, follow through on assignments, and anticipate, identify, and analyze situations and independently seek solutions or recommend course of action as appropriate.

  • Proven ability to exercise effective control over situations or events and ability to make recommendations or decisions that affect office and laboratory operations.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety including radioactive/biohazard handling and disposal techniques, and the ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety regulations.

  • Ability and experience troubleshooting and recommending modifications to procedures and protocols to meet the needs of research projects. Ability to analyze and interpret results.

  • Ability to follow federal, state and university regulations for the conduct of scientific research.

  • Demonstrated experience in general laboratory maintenance and cleanliness.

  • Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail, and prioritize work according to research needs.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions. Ability to work with a diverse group of researchers. Excellent written skills and knowledge of English language, including grammar, usage, spelling, and punctuation. Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills. Demonstrated skill to communicate clearly, effectively, tactfully, and patiently in person, on the telephone, and in writing to a diverse group of people in the academic and scientific communities. Ability to present a positive impression in person, on the telephone, and through written correspondence.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D. in Biology has both molecular biology and neurobiology experience is desirable, as well as a strong track record of publications in internationally recognized journals.

  • Experience with Magnetic Resonance Imaging and strong computational/analytic skills.

  • Experience in operating confocal microscopes. Skills work with BSL2 level virus preparation.

  • Strong ability to use Linux system, Windows and software source control system.

  • Ability to work collaboratively on a research project and learn new experimental methods. Ability to work in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community with lab personnel in chemistry, physics and computer sciences.
