Job Details

Job Title: Faculty Position in Computational Pathology/Biology - Academic Track
Location: Twin Cities
Regular/Temporary: Regular
Full/Part Time: Full-Time
Job ID: 326666
Qualifications

Candidates must hold a Ph.D., M.D. or M.D. /Ph.D., or an equivalent degree. Academic rank and appointment type will be commensurate with years of experience and accomplishments. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a strong record of research productivity and academic achievement in an analytical field, and the ideal candidate will have 3+ years of experience analyzing complex data sets and 3+ years of programming experience in a high-level computer programming language.

About the Job The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Minnesota is seeking to hire a full-time tenure track/tenured or academic track faculty member to join our Division of Computational Pathology. Computational Pathology is an emerging field that seeks to extract clinically actionable knowledge from high-dimensional data and to present that information to clinicians in an interactive and intuitive way that optimizes clinical decision making and maximizes patient safety. The goal is to use intelligent algorithms, including machine learning, to design decision support systems that will allow for continuous quality improvement beyond current best practices, while at the same time being faster and less burdensome to the stakeholders in the healthcare environment.

The successful candidate will act as a bridge between the directors of the clinical laboratories that have the content expertise and the team of computer programmers that develop and maintain the software that enhances the relevant clinical and research workflows. This will allow the candidate to write impactful manuscripts to disseminate our innovative approaches and will open up grant opportunities for translational research.

Research already underway and possible focus areas include:

Optimizing HLA epitope analysis by data mining years’ worth of Luminex single antigen bead assays to improve solid organ transplant allocations and outcomesUse machine learning algorithms to cluster flow cytometry data in high-dimensional space to identify novel cell populations and to develop more sensitive tests to detect minimal residual diseaseUsing artificial intelligence to perform automated image analysis of surgical pathology slides, allowing the field of digital pathology to transition from a subjective and descriptive assessment to one that is increasingly objective, quantitative and standardizedThe automated calling of structural variation (copy number variants) using cytogenetic SNP arrays and next generation sequencing data with an interactive visualization and comparison to data from other cases seen in the labOther areas that the applicant has experience and/or interest in developing

In addition to advancing the clinical mission, there will be valuable research opportunities through collaborations with the Institute for Health Informatics (http://healthinformatics.umn.edu/) and the Masonic Cancer Center (http://www.cancer.umn.edu) where the successful candidate can mine extensive retrospective data for correlations with clinical outcomes. Opportunities to mentor and teach PhD, MD/PhD and medical students, residents and fellows will also be available.

The University of Minnesota is a large and diverse university and medical school with a large subspecialty practice plan of over 900 physicians, University of Minnesota Physicians. The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology is home to a large number of anatomic and clinical pathology faculty as well as many basic science faculty involved in research, undergraduate and graduate education. The department also has an ACGME approved residency program and five ACGME approved fellowships. More information about the department can be found at http://www.med.umn.edu/pathology/

Diversity Profile: University of Minnesota Rochester

The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) has always prided itself in its diverse student body. UMR is different from other colleges and universities, having a single focus in providing degrees in health care. At this innovative campus, students who are traditionally in underrepresented populations in higher education (students of color, first-year generation students, Pell Grant-eligible students) are not only being retained but are also graduating in four years at rates above national numbers. Last year’s incoming class included 35.7% students of color.

Faculty and staff build relationships with students, connecting them to resources that contribute to student success during their time at UMR. Each student is paired with a success coach and given access to learning cohorts, Living Learning CommunitiesJustASK centers where faculty are readily available, bridge programs, and first-year student research teams.

More than 90% of UMR graduates complete their education and earn their degrees in four years or less, reducing the debt that they incur compared to other universities. Because of the specialized degrees offered at UMR, alumni graduate into a field where they are able to find jobs quickly, fulfilling a workforce shortage. 100% of Bachelor of Science in Health Professions students are employed in their field post-graduation.

Students who graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree continue their studies in medicine, mental health, public health and research.

UMR is constantly being driven to discover new, innovative ways to serve its students. One of the ways this is accomplished is through faculty’s primary research being conducted on student learning. The results of this research is seen in UMR’s unique flipped classrooms, active classroom environment (rather than traditional lecture-based classes), consistent group work, and most notably, the intersection between various subjects. Faculty in UMR’s Center for Learning Innovation offer an integrated curriculum, enabling students to develop critical thinking skills, empowering them to be exceptional learners whose careers address real life and real-world problems in the health care arena.

As the workforce demand in the health care industry increases, as well as the diversity among graduating high school seniors, not only in Minnesota but also around the country and world, UMR is poised to welcome underrepresented students to its purpose-driven campus. UMR’s evidence-based, relationship-driven practices are propelling the University to inspire transformation in higher education through innovations that empower graduates to solve the grand health challenges of the 21st century.
