DepartmentThe Department of Chemistry at theUniversity of Toronto invites applications for a six-month Research Associate(Limited Term) appointment. The anticipated start date is June 24, 2019.


The Research Associate will provide training and administrative supportfor users of the facilities at the Centre for Biofouling Control, whichundertakes chemistry, optics and nano mechanics to investigate fundamentalnanoscale phenomena at surfaces in the Laboratory for Advanced Nanoscience atSurfaces (LANS), i.e. Walker Labs. This is a part-time position operating fromthe Walker Labs.

 The main focus of the research training involves the use of tools forstudying single molecule protein and polymer mechanics and optics by using specializednanoscale technologies of the Centre. Characterization of protein conformationson surfaces of different types, specifically hydrophobic surfaces, and collectinginformation about the secondary structure will be an essential aspect.  The work will involve the application of both supervised andunsupervised research. The successful candidate will manage their own researchprojects and analyses and assist other team members and Centre facility users withthe design and execution of their respective measurements and analyses. Thecandidate will be required to design, plan, optimize, execute and completeanalyses using a wide range of software packages and tools. The candidate willalso be responsible for developing and applying techniques for managing data.

In addition, the candidate will provide advice and support towards thedevelopment of research protocols and the preparation and submission ofmanuscripts and abstracts for publications; prepare presentations forconferences; and provide direction to other research staff. Furthermore, thecandidate will assist in the organization of meetings, training sessions, andother materials used in the studies.

CampusEDUCATION:

  • PhD degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or relatedfields with a focus on characterizing protein secondary structures onhydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces by nanoscale technologies.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in anacademic setting.
  • Academic experience of at least five (5) years, as agraduate student, postdoctoral fellow or academician in Canada.
  • Due to the broad research vision and ongoingprojects of the Walker Labs, the applicant should have demonstrated experienceworking in projects that deal with protein and syntheticpolymers.
SKILLS:
  • Well-developed interpersonal, communication andanalytical skills.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills with solidunderstanding of research methodologies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written andoral, presentation skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in surface and dimensional analysis (e.g. Asylum research MFP, Bruker multimode, Bruker Dimension).
  • Proficient in UV-Vis, Raman and IR spectroscopy.
  • Proficient in functionalize surfaces at nanoscale.
  • Proficient in protein design, modification,expression and purification.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel,PowerPoint), and scientific software (e.g. Igor, OPUS, WiRE). Use computerapplications to enter and retrieve data, access information and produce andedit a variety of effective correspondence, documents and reports.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability towork independently, with minimal supervision.
