The STEM Career Advisor position sits within Career & Professional Development (CPD), which is a part of the Global Networks team in the Advancement division. CPD is one of five offices on campus providing career development services to DU students and alumni. CPD serves all of the undergraduate programs, recent graduates, University College, and multiple graduate programs not served by the other career services offices on campus. We provide a full range of services including one-on-one career advising, innovative career programming and events, annual career fairs and networking events, on-campus recruiting, access to thousands of jobs, internships and alumni and employer connections. CPD is a very fast-paced, busy office that connects with students, faculty, staff, a wide variety of departments and divisions across campus, employers, alumni, parents/families and the community.

Position Summary

The STEM Career Advisor provides direct comprehensive career services as a primary liaison for undergraduate students and first-year alumni in the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) and as a secondary liaison for undergraduate students in the Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science (RSECS). This individual will provide one-on-one career advising and programming to undergraduate students in both NSM and RSECS.

The STEM Career Advisor will partner closely with the Associate Director of CPD to develop and implement career programming and events, including new initiatives, to grow and maintain the engagement of both NSM and RSECS students, as related to the mission of DU IMPACT 2025. When needed and requested, this individual will present career education concepts via class visits for both NSM and RSECS undergraduate students. The STEM Career Advisor will work with faculty and staff to continue fostering relationships in NSM. The STEM Career Advisor conducts regular outreach to NSM faculty and staff and acts the CPD voice in meetings with NSM partners.
The STEM Career Advisor will act as a Mentor to the Peer Advisors as part of the Peer Advisor Program and graduate student employees who serve the STEM function within the office. This position may have the opportunity to develop Peer Advisor training and/or teach a Careers & Leadership course for undergraduate students.

The STEM Career Advisor will collaborate with the Alumni Engagement and Employer Connections team to communicate student interests and needs within their student populations.

The STEM Career Advisor will demonstrate advocacy of inclusive excellence values in student professional development and employer relationship management.

This individual must be able to work evenings or weekends as necessary. The position reports to the Associate Director of Career & Professional Development.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in advising or coaching.
  • 2 years of related advising and/or coaching experience.
  • Experience developing and planning programs, career-related programs preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree, preferably in higher education, counseling, or STEM industry-related field
  • STEM industry experience and/or involvement in STEM related activities or services in the greater community.
  • Career development experience in a higher education institution.
  • Familiarity with a range of career assessments or Myers Briggs Type Indicator or Strong Interest Inventory Certification.
  • Knowledge of StrengthsFinder.
  • Experience assisting individuals in using effective techniques for cover letter and resume writing, searching for opportunities, networking, interview preparation, etc.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Evenings and weekends as required
