SUMMARY:

The “Teacher in Residence” (Physics Teacher Preparation Program Manager) is an experienced high school teacher who works at the university to support its mission to increase the number of highly qualified high school physics teachers graduating from the institution. The program aims to improve the education of future physics teachers, as well as, focuses on course improvement and community-buildig activities. A&M-Commerce has been working to improve our physics teacher preparation program over the past several years and has been selected as a new PhysTEC Comprehensive Site (https://www.aps.org/publications/apsnews/201505/phystec.cfm).

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate, manage and grow the Community for Advancement of Physics Education (CAPE), a collaborative group consisting of both in-service and pre-service high school physics teachers along with university learning assistants.
  • Identify opportunities and develop solutions for continuous program improvement related to curricula, pedagogy, advising, mentoring, recruitment and retention, career/workforce preparation, resources and faculty development.
  • Assist with recruiting students to become physics teachers from current students, area high schools, and the community.
  • Works closely with department faculty to enhance teaching methods and course content.
  • Lead, coordinate and manage CAPE teacher workshops.
  • Provide mentorship to pre-service teachers and learning assistants.
  • Coordinating the Learning Assistant Program by identifying how to utilize learning assistants to enhance program and course success.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Bachelor’s
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Five (5) years of related experience to include teaching high school physics. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a team of professionals. Good written and oral communication skills. Strong organizational skills. Dedication to high standards and student success.
  • Ability to: Multi-task and work well as part of a team.
  • Licensing/Professional Certifications: Secondary science certification (physics/math, physical science, or composite science)

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree. Experience working with a community of teachers. Knowledge of physics education research.
