The Department of Sociology & Anthropology at the University of Puget Sound invites applications for a cultural anthropologist focused on issues of race and ethnicity. Additional expertise in the intersections of race/ethnicity and the environment, language, or science and technology preferred. We are most interested in applicants whose teaching and research will broaden the range of our current course offerings, and complement existing faculty strengths, with some preference for a focus on Africa, South Asia, Pacific Islands, or the Caribbean.

The department seeks an outstanding teacher-scholar with a deep interest in and commitment to pedagogy and the liberal arts, and to the discipline of anthropology. This tenure-line appointment will be made at the assistant professor level in the interdisciplinary Department of Sociology & Anthropology. The faculty member will be expected to teach courses in the department’s existing curriculum, including Introduction to Anthropology, Ethnographic Methods, Race and Ethnic Relations, and Anthropological Theory, first-year seminars, and to contribute their own elective courses to the department. Ability and willingness to participate in experiential educational opportunities, including ethnographic projects and faculty-led study abroad for Puget Sound students, is preferred. Other duties include advising students, continuation of professional development in the field of cultural anthropology, and participating in serving Puget Sound’s institutional mission.


A PhD degree (ABD considered) in cultural anthropology and a commitment to liberal arts education are required.
