Job Description:

Description of the Office of Financial Aid: The SUNY Oswego Financial Aid Office exists to make a quality Oswego education affordable to all students! We believe that an Oswego education and degree is an investment and guide and assist students and their families understand and coordinate the financial tools available to make student dreams a reality. The SUNY Oswego Financial Aid Office provides financial resources and services to assure that all students are able to attend the College, regardless of their background and family financial circumstances. We believe all students and families should have access to all information, resources, and exceptional service to assure the student's academic goals are financially possible. Our dedicated, friendly, experienced and knowledgeable staff provide high-quality service to students and families which includes providing financial advisement and training, and processing financial aid applications in an effective, efficient and regulatory compliant manner.

The Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full-time Director of Financial Aid. This title is in Appendix A of the SUNY Policies of the Board of Trustees.

The Director of Financial Aid will:

  • Provide overall leadership and management necessary to effectively administer the student financial aid program at SUNY Oswego, including fiscal management of financial aid, federal and state compliance and reporting, customer service and information, and systems management.
  • Provide ongoing review and coordination of the philosophy, goals and operations of the office to insure consistency with furthering the mission and supporting the strategic plan of SUNY Oswego.
  • Coordinate the implementation and maintenance of the computer support system.
  • Fully utilize available funds in compliance with law and regulation to the best advantage of Oswego students; develop, implement, maintain, and where appropriate, publish policies and procedures used in administering federal, state and alternative financial aid programs.
  • Insure a financial aid operation in which students, parents and other constituents feel respected and confident in the information and assistance provided. Counsel prospective and current students and their families concerning financial aid options, procedures and policies.
  • Manage the office so that knowledgeable personnel, respectful of the sensitive nature of individual finances, needs and personal circumstances, are readily available. Hire, train, and evaluate, on an annual basis, staff members, emphasizing service, courtesy and professionalism.
  • Develop and maintain informational materials in a variety of formats and designed to education prospective students and their families, current students, faculty, and staff about availability, application procedures, and program requirements for financial aid. Maintain an effective and accurate website to provide prospective and current students with appropriate information and tools.
  • Collaborate with other departments to provide exemplary service to students and their families. Coordinate Financial Aid efforts with Student Accounts to assure effective financial aid service to our students. Coordinate Financial Aid efforts with Admissions to maximize student recruitment, enrollment and retention. Manage the veterans' benefits codification process.
  • Assist the EOP office by providing training and supervision for the person assigned to the financial aid component of that operation. Award direct funds in the Banner process. Serve as a resource for admissions decisions and EOP financial aid policy as requested.
  • Maintain a Student Employment service where faculty, staff, corporations and local residents can list jobs for students, including the General Federal Work Study program, and the AmericaReads and AmericaCounts components.
  • Serve as a resource for departments wishing input on scholarship determinations and for students needing support in obtaining external grants, scholarships, loans, and tuition waivers.
  • Manage participation in the federal Title IV programs and the state programs administered by Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), applications for federal and state funds. Coordinate the completion of the annual NCAA Division III Financial Aid Report.
  • Respond to requests for information from Peterson's Guide, US News and World Report, Money magazine, the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, the New York Secondary Education 4.1 report, and other guides in concert with the offices of Admissions and Institutional Research.
  • Develop and maintain an effective relationship with New York StateJerr HESC to assure the College optimizes the services available from the agency as well as providing guidance and input to the agency related to student loan and grant processing.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Vice President.

The Director of Financial Aid reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.

In addition, the Director of Financial Aid will be expected to display a commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree at time of application.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in a supervisory role in a student-centered, service-oriented financial aid office.
  • Proven knowledge of Title IV federal financial aid regulations, state grant financial aid regulations, and federal financial needs analysis.
  • Experience with Banner, or similar system, information systems data. Must be comfortable navigating the database and also designing processes, data queries, and maintaining system integrity
  • Extensive knowledge of computer based financial aid packaging and reporting systems. A history of streamlining processes using automation and self-service.
  • Strong analytical skills. Must possess the ability to engage in data analysis, strategic projections and to incorporate financial aid leveraging and other strategies to impact the overall enrollment management and student success goals of the College.
  • Student outreach experience and the ability to communicate with a diverse group of students and parents and other internal and external constituents regarding financial aid, along with a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across departments and with all constituent groups.
  • Demonstrated evidence of strong leadership and management skills. Must possess the ability to keep staff motivated and working at optimum levels, especially at peak times, and establish a customer service-focused culture, balanced with accurate processing.
  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented with an emphasis on excellence in student service.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) via all media (phone, face-to-face, email, text, and live chat) required to effectively interact with students, the general public, College staff and faculty.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree.
  • Previous experience at a financial aid director level.
  • Significant experience in financial aid management and supervisory experience in a financial aid office.
