DESCRIPTION:
This is a full-time, categorically funded, non-tenure track academic position. Under the direction of the Math-Science Upward Bound Coordinator, the incumbent counsels Math-Science Upward Bound students at Monterey Peninsula College and on high school campuses and performs additional assignments as directed. The work year for this position is 185.5 days from July 1 - June 30.

Assignments include day, evening and weekend hours at the Monterey campus, Marina Education Center, and other sites in the community.

Full-time faculty have responsibilities outside the classroom through contributions to the department and the college which include curriculum development and evaluation, and participation in student achievement and success. Faculty are expected to engage in campus life and become involved in college committees.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
As a full-time faculty member in Student Services the successful candidate will also
• Provides academic, career, and personal counseling to high school students participating in the Math-Science Upward Bound Program.

• Coordinate, develop, and implement Summer Academy at UC Santa Cruz, including residential and academic components.

• Work collaboratively with targeted secondary schools and other educational institutions, to develop and maintain working relationships to support student success.

• Plans and implements college orientation experiences such as field trips, mentor and study skills workshops, math/science regional summer applications, and career and college search activities.

• Assists the Math-Science Upward Bound Coordinator in recruiting and selecting eligible students.

• Assists students to qualify and apply to college through academic advising, SAT and ACT preparation, and assisting with college applications and financial aid applications.

• Teaches College Orientation and Career Planning classes in the Math-Science Upward Bound summer program.

• Maintains appropriate records of activities and student participation.

• Performs professional assignments, including committee membership and other responsibilities.

• Refers students to other appropriate services for assistance, support, or advice beyond the responsibility of the counselor.

• Assists students develop appropriate educational plans.

• Reviews each high school student's schedule of classes and transcripts to assure that the student is pursuing a planned educational program.

• Provides students with institutional information about financial aid and college application policies and procedures.

• Monitors the Math-Science Upward Bound attendance policy.

• Coordinates information and services with the other college counselors at MPC and at high schools and colleges/universities.

• Assists the Coordinator in follow-up research on former Math-Science Upward Bound students attending post-secondary schools.

• Assists the Coordinator with data collection and submission of reports including the Annual Performance Report.

• Supervises/coordinates and evaluates district student help and work study students as such positions are assigned and submits accurate records, time cards, and other required documents promptly.

• Participates in curriculum planning, course revision and budget planning and serves on college committees, including faculty recruitment and other activities as appropriate.

• Perform collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and participation in shared governance committees and campus life activities.

• Continue professional development and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops, and other appropriate means.

• Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the MPCTA Contract, and as assigned at the Monterey campus, the Education Center at Marina, and/or other designated locations.

• Conducts structured field trips for Math-Science Upward Bound students to transfer institutions as identified by the Math-Science Upward Bound Coordinator.

• Performs other related duties as assigned by the Math-Science Upward Bound Coordinator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling OR
• Bachelor's in one of the above AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) valid in California. OR

AND
• Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Personal and Professional Qualities:
1. Knowledge of and commitment to counseling and teaching;

2. Excellent interpersonal skills;

3. Willingness and ability to work cooperatively with community organizations/groups, campus community, and colleagues on matters to promote TRIO services.

4. Effective oral and written communication skills;

5. Ability to meet the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and a wide range of skills and goals.

Desirable Qualifications:
1. Experience, training, or demonstrated ability to perform as a counselor working with high school students.

2. Experience, training, or demonstrated ability to function successfully in a professional counseling work environment.

3. Experience, training, or demonstrated ability to provide higher education outreach and recruitment programs for low income, first-generation college, disabled, and/or ethnic minority students.

4. Experience with or ability to conduct classroom presentations, workshops and other public speaking events.

5. Experience with or ability to provide intrusive counseling services to high school students.

6. Experience with or ability to conduct assessment, orientation, advisement, placement, follow-up, and research.

7. Experience, training, or demonstrated ability to effectively plan and implement projects and activities, while working independently.

Anticipated Starting Compensation
Initial salary placement is based on the current full-time salary schedule and on verification of education and experience. Starting salary is $54,118 - $73,386 annually. In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate may also earn an annual Doctoral stipend of
$2,881 or an annual multiple Masters' stipend of $2,043.
