Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Research and Instruction Librarian provides research assistance and guidance to students, faculty, staff and other library users. The librarian uses his/her/their expertise to teach research skills, and assists with collection development and assessment.
The Research and Instruction Librarian serves as liaison to Monterey Bay Area Cooperative Library System (MOBAC) committees as assigned. In collaboration with other members of the library staff, other Middlebury Institute departments, campus clubs and groups she/he/they plan library programs. As part of the Public Services team, she/he/they will contribute her/his/their individual skills and expertise as needed in order to help the team achieve its objectives. This is a full-time staff position including weekend and evening duty.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions:

• Provides research assistance to students, faculty, staff and other library patrons
• Provides library and information skills instruction through new student, faculty and research fellow orientations, course and assignment-specific hands-on workshops and classroom sessions, online tutorials, and one-on-one online and in-person instruction
• Participates in online and hybrid courses as research liaison via Canvas or other course platforms
• Serves as liaison for specific programs and/or specializations
• Develops and updates research guides in response to user needs
• Participates in collection development in collaboration with the Collection Development Committee
• Serves as liaison to the MOBAC Reference Committee
• Participates in Middlebury/Monterey Research and Instruction team meetings and collaborative projects
• Develops and maintains statistical reports and seeks faculty and student feedback for assessment of research and instruction services
Participates in collection development and assessment
• Plans and executes library programs in coordination with other staff

General Responsibilities:
• Assists with supervision of library graduate assistants in coordination with the Borrowing Services Manager
• Oversees library operations during evening and weekend shifts when no other staff members are present
• Assists with circulation services
• Assists with course reserve material processing
• Assists with maintenance of computers, printer/copiers, scanners and other library equipment
• Maintains expertise by staying abreast of emerging trends in academic libraries
• Documents and interprets policies and procedures
• Complies with copyright law as it applies to academic libraries
• Actively participates in team meetings and collaborative projects
• Serves as library representative on designated campus committees and working groups
• Maintains a close working relationship with all library staff
• Maintains confidentiality of library patron records
• Complies with campus safety guidelines
• In collaboration with other staff members, ensures that public and staff areas are safe, clean and inviting
• Communicates with appropriate campus staff regarding facilities, technology, and safety issues
• Ensures appropriate and effective use of shared departmental folders, email accounts, calendars, social media, and websites
• Other responsibilities as required to assist the library in accomplishing its mission

Qualifications
Education:

• MLIS from an American Library Association accredited library school

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of print and online research tools
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Commitment to professional development
• Ability to work in a team-oriented environment
• Ability to work independently after training
• Strong commitment to providing excellent service to patrons
• Good organization skills and attention to detail
• Excellent instruction and research skills, oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills required
• Creativity, flexibility and a willingness to develop new competencies required

Experience:
• At least three years of previous library research/reference experience is preferred
• Experience with instruction, especially trends in online pedagogical strategies
• Experience with Office, Adobe and Google tools
• Experience with library systems especially Innovative Sierra platform (preferred)
• Experience with library equipment including computers, printers, scanners

Physical Demands:
The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey maintains a smoke-free workplace and complies with the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and Drug-Free Workplace Act.
Position requires light to moderate physical effort and the ability to work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
