The Department of Computer Science (CS) at the College of Engineering seeks applicants for the position of Assistant or Associate Director of Research to successfully submit proposals to large funding opportunities, especially aimed at center-scale research projects led by departmental faculty. These responsibilities include finding grant opportunities, organizing meetings of departmental faculty to inform them about major funding opportunities, leading individual teams in developing and submitting proposals, and establishing and growing an industrial affiliates program. The Assistant or Associate Director is responsible for forming multi-disciplinary teams of researchers within the Computer Science (CS) department as well as other researchers at UIUC to respond to funding opportunities. The Assistant or Associate Director will work closely with University of Illinois faculty in these endeavors.

Major Duties and Responsibilities include the following (may vary depending on position level):

  • Provide leadership to faculty in the development, coordination and planning of proposals in response to major funding opportunities. This includes:
    • Implementing strategies for monitoring funding opportunities; attaining detailed knowledge of federal, state, foundation and campus research funding programs; creating and maintaining an interactive database or website with information about these opportunities; educating the CS faculty about these opportunities; leading informational meetings about these opportunities when appropriate.
    • Using technical writing skills for proposal development and creation; identifying, improving, and submitting grant proposals in conjunction with faculty, staff, and other campus units; producing attractive figures for use within proposals, managing budget preparation, proposal timelines and shared content, assuring compliance with funding agency and University policies, and ensuring attainment of submission deadlines.
    • Learning about CS faculty research interests; identifying collaborative possibilities that could be led by CS faculty, potentially spanning UIUC and external collaborators, and matching them to available funding opportunities; facilitating formation of multi-disciplinary teams led by CS faculty to prepare for potential funding opportunities; developing and maintaining record-keeping system for tracking research activity and interests within the university that are related to CS faculty research.
  • Lead the collaboration of departmental staff and Sponsored Programs Administration to assure compliance with funding agency requirements and University submission policies to submit completed proposals.
  • Implement strategies for CS faculty and staff to identify industry sponsorship connections, organize industry visits, connect CS researchers with industry collaborators, support industry workshops, and develop and sustain an active membership-based industrial affiliates program.
  • Serve as point of contact for the department with Office of Research of the College of Engineering with respect to identification of funding opportunities, building trans-campus teams, preparation of proposals and related activities.
  • Advise CS faculty leading large projects with recruiting scientific and administrative staff to support their projects.
  • Perform and coordinate pink, red, gold, and white team reviews of proposals.
  • Assume additional appropriate duties to further the research mission of the
    department.

Required Qualifications – Assistant Director:

  • M.S. degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • 5 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience in technical writing, including proofreading and editing
  • Demonstrated strong proficiency in all forms of communication (oral, written, email)
  • Prior experience with proposal development, with demonstrated success in obtaining research funding from federal agencies or industry or both
  • Solid time management and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications – Assistant Director:

  • PhD in a related, applicable field with 1 year of related work experience
  • Ability to think strategically and to make connections across disciplines within Computer Science and related fields
  • Experience and/or understanding of federal, state and campus research funding programs
  • Experience in a higher education environment
  • Experience in interdisciplinary multi-institutional research projects
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with both internal and external constituents
  • Ability to work either independently or collaboratively as needed
  • Prior experience with pink, red, gold, and white team review

Required Qualifications – Associate Director:

  • M.S. degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in a large research institution
  • Experience in research proposal development and creation
  • Strong technical writing skills, including proofreading and editing
  • Ability to perform core job duties independently, utilizing good judgment and prioritization skills
  • Demonstrated strong proficiency in all forms of communication (oral, written, email)
  • Prior experience with proposal development, with demonstrated success in obtaining research funding from federal agencies or industry or both
  • Solid time management and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications – Associate Director:

  • PhD in a related, applicable field with 3 years of related work experience
  • Ability to think strategically and to make connections across disciplines within Computer Science and related fields
  • Experience and/or understanding of federal, state and campus research funding programs
  • Knowledge of University research funding programs and the relevant guidelines and procedures for submitting proposals to large funding opportunities
  • Experience in interdisciplinary multi-institutional research projects
  • Ability to work either independently or collaboratively as needed
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with both internal and external constituents
  • Prior experience with pink, red, gold, and white team review

The Visiting Assistant or Associate Director of Research position is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. This position may become a regular, permanent position at a later date depending on funding and programmatic need. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Research

Undergraduate Education
