Position Summary:

As part of an NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority and Women’s Internship Grant, Willamette University is looking to fill the position of Sports Performance Coordinator. The primary duty of the position is to assist head coaches in developing and implementing a comprehensive strength and conditioning program for our 19 varsity sports. Will work as a member of the athletic department leadership team in conjunction with department staff and campus partners to develop a program that focuses on performance enhancement, injury prevention, and overall wellness. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, 10 months, 2 year Grant Funded position with an annual salary of $25,000 and $3,000 annual reimbursement for professional development.

JOB DUTIES:

The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following functions, which are not listed in any particular order of importance or significance:

  • Under supervision of the Director of Athletics and working with Willamette University’s head coaches, assist with the development and implementation of sport specific strength and conditioning programs for 19 intercollegiate athletic teams so that the needs of each athlete and team are met.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, evaluation, monitoring and record keeping of in-season and out-of-season team & individual programs that increase strength, improve speed, flexibility, conditioning, and agility of the university’s varsity student-athletes, specific to their sport’s needs and standards.
  • Maintain a high level of professional communication between sport coaching staff, athletic trainers, and physical therapists.
  • Comply with and ensure all NCAA, NWC, Willamette University, and Athletic Department guidelines, recommendations, and regulations are adhered to, and that the safety and well-being of the student-athletes is protected at all times.
  • Serve as a professional mentor to Sparks Fitness Center student staff.
  • Provide a safe and appealing environment for athletes with guidance and proper training techniques for all strength training equipment to ensure safe and proper use, and educate student-athletes on proper exercise techniques and appropriate training methods.
  • Provide nutrition counseling and assist in the education & prevention of athletic injuries resulting from speed, strength & conditioning related activities.
  • Support and actively contribute to the goal of achieving greater diversity, inclusion and equity at Willamette University and work effectively with all members of the campus community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, exercise science, physical education, health sciences, strength training or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a strength & conditioning coach at the collegiate or professional level.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising the physical conditioning, weight training and dietary needs of student-athletes.
  • Experience with instruction and coaching proper techniques including, but not limited to, mobility, plyometric, speed, agility, Olympic and traditional lifting, core training and metabolic conditioning.
  • Demonstrated experience working with coaches in developing sport specific programs
  • Strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Proof of progress toward completion of certification by the National Strength & Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), or by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (SCCC or Master SCC).
  • Thorough knowledge of and adherence to all applicable NCAA Div. III and Conference rules as they apply to the activities and programs within the incumbent's designated assignment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain working relationships with other staff, faculty, and students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of diversity and inclusion best practices .
  • Must possess a current driver's license valid in the state of Oregon and a driving record insurable by the University's insurer.
  • Must be First-Aid/CPR/AED certified.

TYPICAL WORK SCHEDULE:   

  • Monday – Friday 8 am – 5 pm is typical with possible extended hours at the beginning of each semester.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to execute those physical activities required to perform the essential functions including, but not limited to, regular standing, sitting, and being mobile; frequent walking, running, and reaching; occasional throwing, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying weights up to 100 lbs.
  • Continual talking and hearing both in person and on the telephone.
  • Frequent keyboarding; regular seeing; and all other activities required to perform essential functions.
