Overview:
Under the direction of the Head Track and Field/Cross Country Coach, the incumbent will be responsible to recruit quality student-athletes (with an emphasis in distance events which include 800m and up) within the guidelines of the Code of Recruitment as required by the Head Coach; coach student-athletes in practice and competition; monitor the conditioning and training of the student-athletes; teach and develop sport specific skills and strategies to enhance the athletic performance of student-athletes; assist in the success of team performance and eligibility criteria; organize and direct local, regional and/or national meets as required; conduct summer camps and track/field clinics; enforce written team rules and expectations including while traveling and on and off campus conduct; comply with NCAA, Conference and University rules and policies; assist in the monitoring and maintenance of academic progress and eligibility of team members, and in the coordination of team travel as needed; if applicable, prepare data and reports as necessary in support of the NCAA, Conference and University rules compliance; assist in the promotion of fund raising activities; assist in Title IX and diversity outreach.

Position Summary:
Major duties of the job include:

  • Recruit Quality D-I student-athletes
  • Plan and direct the education of student-athletes in techniques, skills and conditioning to enhance their athletic progress
  • Monitor and maintain academic progress and eligibility status of student-athlete team members, in cooperation with Academic Support Services
  • Assist in contest scheduling and coordination of team travel
  • Coordinate with the Compliance Office for continued compliance of NCAA, MWC and University rules and regulations
  • Ensure student compliance with written team rules
  • Assist with promotion of fundraising activities and/or the promotion of events, as required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and policies
  • Strong communication and motivation skills
  • Coaching philosophy and teaching concepts must be compatible with those of the Head Coach
  • Ability to work cooperatively with coaches, staff, faculty, students, and members of the community
  • Commitment to academic integrity and compliance with University, conference and NCAA regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and project a professional attitude
  • Ability and willingness to support the equity and diversity commitments of the department
  • A history of regular attendance and positive performance evaluations

    Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution
  • Minimum of two years coaching experience at D-I, D-II or JC Level within Track and Field and Cross Country

    Preferred Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in kinesiology, physiology, exercise science or some related field of study
  • Two to five years coaching experience in Track and Field and Cross Country at the Division-I level or professional level
  • Experience and demonstrated ability in recruiting quality student-athletes
