Description:

The Part-Time Outdoor Adventures Instructor is responsible for executing Outdoor Adventures programming in specific and technical areas such as kayaking, and climbing. These programs will be operated with Outdoor Adventures Student Assistants and direction from the Coordinator and Assistant Director of Outdoor Adventures. Each Outdoor Adventures Instructor will hold specific certification, knowledge and expertise in a technical area relating to Outdoor Adventures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides a safe and fun environment for all participants
  • Promotes a culture of learning and stewardship of the environment
  • Facilitates and guides Outdoor Adventures programming in the area of expertise
  • Drives passenger vans with or without trailers and participants
  • Ensures all safety protocols are followed and are appropriate for the specific program; facilitates rescues as needed
  • Follows industry standard instructor to student ratios
  • Communicates with supervisor when unsafe conditions occur and reports equipment in need of repair
  • Provides quality customer service to all participants
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Instructor or Guide level Certification from a nationally recognized organization for one or more of the following sessions: White Water Kayaking, Coastal Kayaking, Rock Climbing, Tree Climbing
  • GA driver’s license or ability to obtain before employment
  • Knowledge of and facilitation experience in a technical area of need to Outdoor Adventures (climbing, paddling etc.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 Year / Associate Degree
  • Current Wilderness First Responder Certification or lapsed certification with ability to obtain recertification prior to first program
  • Previous driving experience and driver training in the Smith System Defensive Driving techniques
  • Previous experience towing and loading an equipment trailer
  • Knowledge of Outdoor Adventures policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of local adventure locations

Position may require local travel and an irregular schedule. Ability to lift and carry files and materials. Ability to move from one office to another office on campus. Adequate vision, hearing and manual dexterity to interact with people in person, on the phone and in writing. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
