Description:

Assists faculty members in the technical aspects of their teaching and research. Primary responsibilities include building, maintaining, and repairing research laboratory equipment, introductory laboratory equipment, and classroom demonstration materials. This work can include wood working, metal working, and work with electronics to design, fabricate, and maintain items to meet faculty needs. This position also includes purchasing equipment for the shop and maintaining tools and resources in the shop, as well as other incidental tasks such as moving large items, refurbishing office space, setting up, and taking down demonstrations and laboratories.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with faculty, staff, and students on design and construction of research, teaching, and senior projects. This work includes woodworking, metalworking, and electrical instrumentation. Approximately half of this work is done for the Physics Department and half for the Psychology, Geoscience, and Biology Departments. Time permitting, projects may be facilitated for Archaeology, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Environmental Studies.
  • Regularly assists Science Center students and faculty with quick short-term projects, such as drilling holes, cutting wood, and soldering wires.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs various broken laboratory equipment, sometimes urgently.
  • Advises faculty and students on components and instrumentation accessories to fit their needs.
  • Supervises students working in the shop, making sure they are following proper safety practices and shop procedures.
  • Assists with setting up, tearing down, and maintaining equipment for research laboratories, introductory laboratories, and teaching spaces.
  • Purchases wood, metal, and electrical components for science project construction needs.
  • Purchases materials, hardware and electrical components to maintain adequate stock for projects and miscellaneous work.
  • Maintains tools or related accessories and performs preventative maintenance on lab and shop equipment.
  • Teaches machine shop course for summer students, instructing them in shop safety practices and fundamentals of machine tool operations.
  • Maintains proper documentation of lab equipment and related accessories that have been purchased, constructed or modified. Keeps abreast of current technologies.

Qualifications:

The equivalent of an A.S degree in Electrical Technology plus one year certification or the equivalent of at least three years’ experience in Machining and Shop Practices.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of electronics and electricity; knowledge of machining and shop practices; knowledge of wood working; ability to layout and design electrical/mechanical apparatus; ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical and mechanical equipment; ability to use various tools and test equipment (volt/ohm meters; oscilloscopes; power supplies; power tools such as drills, band saw, lathe, milling machine, table saw, hand tools, etc.). Ability to understand computer logic and programming to construct various interfacing devices for outside world applications (relays, motors, lights, etc.); ability to perform diagnostic testing on computers. Knowledge of welding, soldering, metal working, pneumatics, hydraulics, and basic carpentry. Willingness to keep abreast of latest technologies through subscriptions, seminars, self-studies, and local organizations. Bookkeeping skills. Ability to document and catalog information of apparatus built (drawing detailed outline of electrical schematics and mechanical functions), repaired, modified, or purchased. Safety consciousness. Ability to work with outside vendors for purchasing, technical, and general information (mechanical/electrical, operation, ratings, pricing, etc.). Supervisory skills to guide student helpers or students working in shop. Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with both faculty and students.
