Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The purpose of the Offices of Institutional Research & Effectiveness is to support the university’s mission by providing data and information to facilitate the decision-making process. This information includes studies and reports on the operations of instructional and operational/administrative areas and also policies pertinent to academic divisions and to the success of students and the institution. The specific aim of this function is to probe deeply into the workings of the institution for evidence of weaknesses or flaws that interfere with the attainment of its purpose and to take the results of these findings and develop strategies to correct and improve on current functions. We guide and assist the University in Regional reaffirmation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and other specialized accreditation’s.
The offices provide informational and statistical data to support planning, resource allocation and program evaluation to the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, key administrators, and department chairs. In addition, our offices have the major responsibility for reporting University data on students, faculty/staff, and facilities to the University of North Carolina – System Office, federal, state, and other external agencies and groups.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
This position serves the University by providing dynamic data reporting and analysis services. The position holder is an expert in the knowledge of university data as well as data typically used in post-secondary education. This position provides key information to assist with institutional policy and program decisions with the knowledge and vision that changes in technology will guide the display and reporting of data now and in the future.
This position reports to the Associate VC for Institutional Research and Effectiveness and is expected to independently manage day-to-day administration of data collection and reporting. In addition, the position holder will perform complex analyses, forecasting, and modeling, while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of data used for all University activities. The work produced by the position holder will have significant impact on decision making regarding a defined service, function, or population (student, faculty and staff, alumni). This position interacts with many campus units, as well as external agencies, including UNC System Office and most often interacts with Institutional Research and Analytics colleagues and Academic Affairs units, particularly Enrollment Management and ITTS.Description of Work Continued:
Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include the collection, extraction, and manipulation of large data sets from various sources; and incorporation of applied research methods to analyze data, including appropriate interpretation of analysis results in support of the University’s planning, decision-making, strategic planning, and reaffirmation activities. Develop statistical analyses to perform educational research studies; and assist administrators, faculty and staff in the implementation of such studies, and in gathering and compiling statistics relating to the educational environment. Publications derived from institutional or national trends are expected and encouraged. Perform other tasks as required.
The Director of IR and Analytics manages data and reporting projects, conducts statistical analyses, and reports information. The Director will extract data from enterprise resource systems and other data sources and subsequently use sound practices of data analysis and visualization. This position provides information solutions with an understanding of best practices and business intelligence. The Director develops interactive visualizations that address a variety of questions and audiences. This position holder must have demonstrable proficiency in SAS or SPSS, SQL, Tableau, as well as other BI or data analytical tools to carry out many of the quantitative and qualitative statistical reporting requirements in addition to the creation and implementation of analytical tools, measurement procedures, and data collection instruments. Review, collect and evaluate national, state, and local surveys, research studies, white papers, and other relevant literature on current and best practices and other relevant topics, and present and otherwise communicate and convey these studies to college constituents. This position supervises two analysts.Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Master’s Degree in higher education, public administration, social science, statistics, or related field of study.Knowledge skills and abilities:
Proficiency with ERP/student information system such as Ellucian/Colleague, SQL, statistical software and data visualization tools is strongly preferred.Preferred Qualifications:
Doctorate or Master’s Degree in research-related field is preferred, as well as proficiency with ERP/student information system Ellucian/Colleague, SQL, and statistical software. Working experience in institutional research or higher education research setting is a plus.
The candidate chosen will have 5-7 years of direct experience in reporting, data science, analytics, business intelligence methodologies and progressively higher experiences in leadership and management roles.Special Instructions to Applicants:
