Your opportunity:

You will assist with the enhancement of the quality of student life on campus by supporting international student development through delivering transitional and immigration advising services within the scope of practice of a Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA). Working closely with the Manager, you will identify pro-active strategies to deliver innovative, responsive and professional programs, workshops and services grounded in student development and intercultural theory in order to engage international and newcomer students in the university community. This role will require you to exercise your sensitivity to student issues and concerns, as well as be highly consultative across a broad range of student groups, student services and academic stakeholders.

You will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating the International Student Centre's transition advising in order to enhance students transitioning to Canada, Toronto and to the University of Toronto Scarborough. In particular, you will be responsible for the UTSC Summer Language and Facilitated Admissions programs, including the Greenpath and Academic English Program. You will also have a supporting role in assisting the delivery of programs and services of the UTSC International Student Centre, including advising and providing referrals; promoting University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP)and retention programming; promoting student exchange programs and other international studies/work opportunities; student volunteer recruitment and staff coordination; UTSC departmental liaison and partnership development; cultural events and training and financial literacy.



Your responsibilities will include:
  • Advising on the interpretation of immigration and other related government policies within the scope of certification through the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council. Advocating on behalf of students with internal and external contacts/agencies
  • Conducting detailed analysis on program efficiency and student learning outcomes to inform program planning activities
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars (e.g. UTSC Summer Language and Facilitated Admissions programs) and determining logistical details
  • Advising students on co-curricular, academic and personal matters by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual's background
  • Advising students on financial aid matters, bursaries, budgeting and personal financial management by probing and providing a range of options and possible outcomes
  • Maintaining information on digital platforms
  • Planning and estimating financial resources required for programs/projects
  • Advising and supporting students on peer mentor partnerships



CampusEssential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of education and experience. Must be registered with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC) and accredited as a Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) or a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC).
  • Minimum four years experience in student development/international student and Canadian immigration advising at the post-secondary level
  • Must have strong experiential background in student life issues related to transition and acculturation within a diverse environment
  • Solid experience in project management and event planning
  • Must have previous work experience developing and delivering cultural training and awareness
  • Experience working with diverse communities and an understanding of international transitional student issues
  • Strong knowledge of international education issues and trends
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Must have knowledge of Canadian immigration laws and practice as it relates to Study Permits and Temporary Resident Visas
  • Must have excellent communication (oral and written), organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Strong ability to exercise tact, judgement and discretion when dealing with confidential information. Ability to relate to students in a manner which builds trust and confidence
  • Demonstrated public speaking experience and excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and be able to work during critical peak periods and under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Strong knowledge of international opportunities available to University students

Assets (Nonessential):
  • Experience working with newcomers in transition is highly desired
  • International experience and a global mindset is a strong asset
  • Experience working with a student information system
