DESCRIPTION

The Senior Manager of Financial Reporting and Accounting Operations acts as the HDH business-unit “Controller” reporting to the Director of Financial & Budget Management (F&BM), and will be primarily responsible for oversight of all accounting, finance and reporting activities of a $189M enterprise. The Sr. Manager will lead all day-to-day financial operations and supervise a team with functional responsibility over internal HDH accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, debt and campus recharges.

The position will ensure that HDH has the systems and procedures in place to support effective UC compliance, program implementation, maintain a stable and thriving business, and conduct flawless internal and external audits. The manager will work closely with executive leadership and their staffs, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can further support and enhance HDH and UCSD operations.

In addition, s/he will partner with the Director of Finance, senior leadership, and the human resources (HR) and information technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate all financial systems and operations. Finally, the Sr. Manager will work closely with the Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis to develop monthly close, variance, and financial reviews with the Director and Associate Directors within HDH to monitor all monthly financial activity.

The position will have a broad scope of responsibilities including all aspects of operational reporting and accounting including month-end, quarterly, and year-end financial statement close & preparation. The incumbent will lead the preparation of the Annual HDH Financial Report, providing detailed financial schedules and the accurate reporting of HDH financial accounting data to UCSD and UCOP consolidated reporting, balance sheet reconciliations and controls, tax compliance and tax reporting, cash flow reporting, accrued expenses, prepaid expenses, bond and other debt reporting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)/Governmental Accounting Standards (GAS) compliance.

This position leads the management of the department’s chart of accounts within FinancialLink, is responsible for providing guidance and direction for HDH’s financial reporting and budgeting system, and ensures HDH compliance with UCOP/UCSD guidelines as part of the day-to-day operational accounting responsibilities. The incumbent will ensure the integrity of the HDH financial and reporting systems within Adaptive Insights in order to provide reliable and accurate financial data and information to all divisions within the department, external customers and stakeholders.

The Sr. Manager acts on behalf of the Director in his absence. The incumbent provides critical direct support and coordination to the Director, the department, and UCSD campus partners. In addition, this position serves a leadership role as a key member of the F&BM division and provides a role in the strategic planning and implementation of the department business systems and operational plan. Overall responsibilities are broad, substantive and critical to the integrity of HDH’s accounting and financial reporting processes.

Housing Dining Hospitality (HDH) is a self-funded, large and complex campus department consisting of 7 divisions, with approximately 700 career employees, 1000 to 1200 student employees and an annual operating budget of greater than $189 million. HDH provides housing for approximately 15,000 undergraduates, grad students, faculty, staff and their families in over 400 buildings covering approximately 6 million sq. ft.

HDH is in the midst of implementing an aggressive building plan which will add 5000 new beds and almost double our square footage by 2021. Currently, HDH houses 38% of UCSD’s enrolled students with a goal of housing 50% in the near future. HDH provides maintenance and repair, contract meals/meal plan management, as well as retail food service, conference services and catering services to residents, students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Extensive experience with managing month-end close process and shortening of close timelines.

  • Strong analytical skills set and solid experience with financial data analysis and preparation of financial reports, statements and projections including cash-flow analysis.

  • Skill in motivating employees, maintaining good morale and stimulating productivity.

  • Advanced systems skills with in depth understanding of building and maintaining a strong internal control environment in a highly automated business structure.

  • Ability to apply knowledge of automated accounting systems to resolve problems, recommend improvements and develop new systems and processes.

  • Proven ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to foster a team oriented environment, working collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to establish and maintain supportive interpersonal relationships with coworkers and customers and to provide quality and courteous service to internal and external customers.

  • Possess superior organizational and documentation skills, attention to detail, strong teamwork skills and the ability to work effectively with internal and external professionals at all levels.

  • Ability to take responsibility for the formation and facilitation of teams, in addition to participation on the division leadership and strategic planning teams, to effect problem resolution, process redesign, or operational efficiencies.

  • Knowledge of team dynamics, ability to work in a team setting, and lead a group of people with disparate opinions and views to a consensus decision making model.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of audit techniques and internal control standards.

  • Ability to evaluate processes to establish and/or maintain appropriate accountability structures and positive internal control elements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Hospitality Accounting / Finance experience
  • CPA / Advanced Business Degree

Effort outside of the normal five day, 8-hour work week may occasionally be required.
