In 2007, the Department of NanoEngineering was established as the sixth and newest department in the Jacobs School of Engineering. This young and vibrant new department is in an intensive growth phase, recruiting faculty and staff, planning new space and facilities, and creating new and exciting graduate and undergraduate programs, currently offering B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in NanoEngineering and Chemical Engineering. The NanoEngineering Department has grown rapidly with approximately 28 faculty members and enrollment for fall 2016 of over 700 undergraduate and 140 graduate students.

Under general supervision of the Department Business Officer (DBO), the HR & AP Manager is a self-starter with the ability to be proactive, multi-task, establish priorities, and use creativity in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The position serves as the principal consultant to the DBO and Financial Manager on human resource and academic personnel issues.

Exercise leadership and discretionary authority to negotiate and/or solve AP/HR concerns; use a high degree of independence, ingenuity and analytical skills to resolve complex, unusual and non-routine problems or issues. Formulate internal policy and procedures and make recommendations to the Chair, DBO and Fiscal Manager for full scope of organizational development, academic personnel and human resources administration, internal communications and policy research and enforcement.

This position oversees and directs the work of the Academic Personnel Analyst and Human Resources Generalist. In collaboration with the Jacobs School of Engineering (JSOE) IT Unit and DBO, design, enhance and maintain academic personnel/human resource web systems and personnel databases.

In addition, as requested by the Chair and/or DBO, the HR & AP Manager coordinates and executes special projects ensuring completion of tasks within established timeliness, meeting project specifications, analyzing problems and recommending solutions. Work with the department business and academic personnel offices as part of a team to provide support to the department's mission.

  • Proficiency with computerized systems, database management, spreadsheets and word processing programs to manipulate data and create reports. Analytical skills to link various relationships and interface information among different computerized systems.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of human resources management systems and other related business software programs and systems.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to interact with diverse personalities within and outside UC utilizing tact, diplomacy and flexibility.

  • Solid ability to set priorities, see tasks through from start to completion in order to meet deadlines, despite frequent interruptions.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, make independent decisions, and to provide consultative services to administrative and academic personnel. Ability to work with little supervision and with initiative, including aptitude to repeat routine tasks without reminders.
