DESCRIPTION

Under supervision of the neuromedical core manager, incumbent provides general research and laboratory support to staff at the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Programs (HNRP). Incumbent collects research specimen via phlebotomy and logs laboratory fluid samples, assists in review of participant charts to identify relevant data, compiles data manually and/or electronically, assists in review of case report forms and performs case report form queries. Sample collection tasks will include drawing the participants’ blood, processing samples through centrifugation and pipetting, labeling each specimen correctly, as well as safely transporting and storing blood samples. Administrative responsibilities as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a GED and two (2) years of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one (1) year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • Demonstrated experience or coursework in Neuroscience, Psychiatry or a related field.

  • Possession of phlebotomy certificate or willingness to obtain a phlebotomy certificate shortly after hire.

  • Proven experience with working with research volunteers. Excellent ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  • Bench experience working with human tissues and fluids.

  • Ability to assist in blood draws by preparing tubes, tourniquet, gauze, etc and observing subject post-venipuncture.

  • Experience performing point-of-care laboratory tests (e.g., urine drug screen) on plasma, CSF and urine as detailed by the study protocol.

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize specific laboratory results and identify abnormal values.

  • Ability to assist in processing of collected samples for clinical and research assays, analysis and storage which includes isolation of lymphocytes from whole blood, centrifugation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to separate cells from supernatant and pipetting fluids and preservatives.

  • Proficiency using MS Office (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Filemaker Pro, analytical programs (e.g., JMP/SAS). Computer (PC and Mac) knowledge to effectively use spreadsheets, databases, word processing programs, email, iPAD, Tablet, and internet.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with working with research volunteers with complex medication histories, extensive medical and neurological issues related to HIV.
  • Experience working with HIV positive and/or substance abusing population.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) to competently communicate and interview research subjects, particularly those with complex medication histories and extensive medical and neurological issues related to HIV.
  • CPR certification.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be willing to work at a large research center with focused on HIV and cannabis.
  • Able to work an occasional Saturday. Must have access to reliable transportation.
