The Undergraduate Admissions Office is responsible for identifying, attracting, recruiting, and enrolling students in sufficient numbers to meet the University’s enrollment projections while improving the academic profile of the incoming student population. The office annually processes approximately 36,000 applications for admission. These include freshmen, transfer, readmit, visitor, non-degree, pre-college, and auditor students. In order to generate and process applications from these prospective students, the office is involved in many public relations, marketing, customer service, and other outreach activities to cultivate inquiries for additional information about ECU/application materials. These inquiries are received via mail, phone, email, and third party search sources and currently exceed well over 100,000 in quantity for one calendar year.

Job Duties

The Assistant Director for Outreach and Relations is responsible for supporting the recruitment of freshmen and transfer students to East Carolina University. This position reports directly to the Senior Associate Director for Outreach and will be primarily focused on outreach and recruitment of underrepresented and underserved populations including from economically and/or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds with an emphasis on Eastern North Carolina.

The position will work closely with campus partners to provide programming and recruitment efforts to attract students from targeted populations and maintain accurate records of contacts including prospects contacted, inquiries responded to and recruitment and yield activities. These reports will contain information related to the outcomes of recruitment initiatives to include budgetary impact and enrollment funnel data for the designated populations.

This position will present information sessions at ECU and in high schools, community colleges, college fairs, community programs and other special events as well as advise and counsel prospective students and families on the educational opportunities at ECU, admission criteria, policies, procedures, academic and major scholarship programs and student services within the university.

This position can expect to travel 2-3 non-continuous weeks per year in and out of state.

The Assistant Director assists in the development, maintenance and execution of the office’s communication plan for prospective and admitted students, online resources for internal and external constituents.

Evaluates applications and participates in general recruitment activities. Participates in the holistic review of applications and makes recommendations for admission based on a comprehensive assessment of candidates.

Participates in regular professional development and training initiatives related to the recruiter and banner systems through which information is stored and managed.

Represents the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at university committees and meetings where appropriate as well as other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Director for Outreach and/or the Director of Admissions.

Experience working with high school students. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) with prospective students and parents whose primary language is Spanish is preferred.
