PRIMARY PURPOSE:Coordinate the First Year Dental Hygiene pre-clinic and clinic experience


1.Course teaching includes:
a.DH 115 Didactic Preclinical Dental Hygiene: Introduces students to the contemporary role of the dental hygienist, the evolving profession of dental hygiene, procedures and techniques utilized in the dental hygiene process of care. Emphasis placed on the development of a comprehensive medical and dental history, diagnostic tools, oral examination, clinical systems and protocol, infection control, risk assessment, basic instrumentation, coronal polishing, and patient communication. DH 115 Lab: Provides students with introduction to basic clinical skills.
•Instructor coordinates activities of assisting faculty and student instructional aids.

b.DH 116 Preclinical Dental Hygiene: Concurrently provides the opportunity for clinical application of material presented in this course.
•Students practice infection control, oral cancer examination, medical history and risk assessment interviewing, and clinical skills.
•Prepares students to begin patient care in Summer Semester
•Coordinates clinical assignments, student preparation, and designs activities.
•Coordinates and calibrates assisting pre-clinical faculty.

c.DH 125 Dental Hygiene Clinic I: Lecture/lab course designed to educate the students as they begin to provide clinical care. Topics include patient assessment, problem identification, dental hygiene care treatment planning, case presentation, treatment implementation, and treatment outcomes evaluation. Principles, rationale and application of alternative fluoride application, ultrasonic scaling, Gracey instrumentation, sealant placement and cardiology are introduced.

d.DH 126 Dental Hygiene Clinic I: Provides students with beginning clinical experience in the treatment of geriatric, adult, adolescent, and child patients.
•Coordinates faculty assignments and provides calibration opportunities, clinical updates, and feedback.
•Provides student understanding of clinical expectations, provides timely feedback, and maintains clinical grades

2.Additional course teaching and working with the senior clinic coordinator and Program Director is expected.

3.Administrative duties include tracking student accomplishments and progress, remediation as needed, advising the student government organization, attending faculty meetings and calibrating faculty are included in the position.

Basic Qualifications

Knowledge of:
•Dental hygiene clinical skills, clinic operation and teaching methodology

Ability to:
• Demonstrate a team approach to clinic management and communication
• Possess effective, humanistic communication and problem solving skills

•Teaching experience strongly preferred
•Proficiency in electronic patient health record desirable
•Minimum of 5 years clinical dental hygiene experience
•Computer skills

• Graduate of U.S. accredited dental hygiene program
• Bachelor’s degree and progress towards Masters’ degree or completion of Masters’ degree program.
• Current California Registered Dental Hygienist license or eligibility

Additional Qualifications

•Teaching experience strongly preferred
•Proficiency in electronic patient health record desirable
•Basic knowledge of California Dental Practice Act
•Understanding of learning management systems

Physical Requirements

Must be able to perform dental hygiene responsibilities to include:
• Have normal tactile feeling (sensitivity to heat, cold, pain, pressure, etc.)
• Have fine motor control with correspondingly hand-eye coordination; hand functions should include rotation, squeezing, and repetitive movements
• Occasional twisting, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and lifting
• Ability to assist patients in transferring themselves to and from a dental chair as needed

Working Conditions:
•Position is eight hours per day, four days per week. Some weekend days for special school events
•Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens may be reasonably anticipated. Personal protective equipment will be provided to reduce or eliminate exposure to routine or limited infectious agents.
