To perform work involving the general maintenance of buildings. Work includes providing common services for mechanical, plumbing and electrical devices, grounds and facility maintenance, as well as general custodial services.

Description of Duties

•Responsible for maintenance and general repairs of campus buildings and infrastructure.
•Provides sub-journeyman work in the performance of a variety of general maintenance repair tasks to include electrical lighting and detail, plumbing, carpentry, and Air Conditioning, such as air filter changes, grounds and custodial maintenance
•Inspects roofs, windows, walls, concrete, and drains, for water leaks and perform repairs as needed.
•May assist other specialized crafts in larger, more complex projects.
•Assists with new employee training when required.
•Assists the warehouse operations in maintaining inventory control and distributes requested materials to all trade groups.
•May require irregular working hours / split shift and “on call” basis.
•Perform other duties as assigned.

May supervise assigned staff in specific tasks.

Required Education

High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Ability to read English well enough to comprehend Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on cleansers, chemicals, and other containers, and to understand work orders, complete time cards, and receive oral and written work directions.

Preferred Education

Completion of related vocational training in a related trade.

Licenses/Certifications

None.

Required Experience

Two (2) years experience in performing a variety of sub-journeyman maintenance tasks.

Equipment

Janitorial equipment and its care and maintenance. Grounds maintenance equipment and care; tractor mower, trimmers, etc. Other general trades’ tools, such as screw drivers, hoe and shovel, wrenches, pliers. Variety of tools and equipment including hand-held and power tools, hydraulic lifts, and forklifts. Use of standard office equipment for daily entry of timecard data, work order information and other general report information

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Some exposure to weather and or physical hazards. Mechanical, electrical, or other craft hazards. May be required to carry a two-way radio and/or pager and must be available on an “on call” basis. Must have a flexible work schedule for evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime. Must be physically able to perform all essential functions and duties of the job. Requires stooping, bending, kneeling, walking, lifting, and carrying of heavy objects to perform job duties. Requires moving, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of heavy furniture, equipment, trash cans, boxes, files, filing cabinets, and other objects weighing up to 50 lbs. when working alone and 100 lbs. with help. Must be able to climb step ladders and maintain balance to clean and wash windows and lighting. This position will be subject to a pre-employment physical.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
