Job Details and Requirement:
The Director of Institutional Philanthropy and Strategic Initiatives will have a multi-faceted set of responsibilities. The position will lead efforts among stakeholders across Claremont McKenna College to design and develop programming and language that reflects and supports fundraising efforts around the College’s top strategic priorities and initiatives. Additionally, the position will be responsible for the creation of written proposals to be used across the College’s development operations, and for stewarding and growing ongoing relationships with institutional funders, including private foundations, corporations and government entities. In addition to being primarily responsible for a large portfolio of institutional funders, this position will collaborate closely with the College’s Office of Leadership Giving in developing strategies and materials to support the solicitation of individual prospects, the office of the Vice President of Advancement and the office of the President of the College on larger strategic initiatives for the College.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with the College President and Vice President of Advancement to design fundraising programs for high-level College initiatives.
- Develop and supervise a methodology and tracking system for project and task management related to significant institutional priorities spanning the College’s many departments and offices.
- Work with the AVP of Advancement Operations to ensure effective flow of proposals, gift agreements and reports through appropriate channels in support of major fundraising initiatives.
- Serve as a liaison linking the College’s development operations with faculty, academic departments, research institutes and student facilities.
- Facilitate networking, information sharing and project management duties between development and other constituencies on campus as institutional priorities are developed.
- Ensure quality control, brand messaging and content remains consistent with the mission and vision of the College and of the College President
- Plan, manage and implement the foundation and corporate relations fund-raising solicitation program for a portfolio of 75 to 100 institutional donors.
- Serve as a primary point-of-contact on the development of funding proposals catered towards both individuals and institutional donors
- Maintain a continuously updated clearinghouse of development language to help describe College initiatives, programs, scholarships, internships and key capital projects.
- Manage proposal development from start-to-finish, including content, procuring images and graphical elements, interfacing with the College’s Public Affairs department and outside contractors as necessary
- Manage and facilitate communications and meetings between College President and Individual and Institutional funders. Ensure that President is fully prepped and briefed on opportunities and challenges
- Identify and conduct in-depth research on foundation and corporate gift opportunities. Maintain a comprehensive prospect management system to track proposals, grants and reports.
- Advise faculty, research institute directors, and administrators concerning gift opportunities. Work with colleagues to develop program specifications and budgets. Participate regularly in senior level development fund-raising strategy sessions.
- Coordinate with the Stewardship office and office of Financial Aid to ensure quality control in the evaluation and assignment of students to CMC’s corporate and foundation-endowed scholarships.
- Develop a robust faculty pipeline encouraging a continued stream of proposals and inquiries to funders for research and other academic projects.
- Establish relationships with government entities, explore funding opportunities and build linkages for potential public-private partnerships where appropriate.
- Build and maintain strong relationships on behalf of the College with individual stakeholders involved with Corporate, Foundation and Government donors.
- Perform proofreading of proposals, reports, letters, memoranda, and other written material.
- Supervise planning and execution of Foundation and Corporate Relations events including campus site visits.
- Work with trustees, alumni, parents, faculty, and staff to establish foundation and corporate contacts. Participate in related College activities and events.
- Develop and execute creative funding mechanisms, in conjunction with the office of the VP for Advancement, AVP of Advancement Operations, and Treasurer’s office, to maximize donor engagement with the College and ensure College programs adhere to Donor intent.
- Handle special projects to assist in the fundraising efforts of the College’s Advancement Department.
- Supervise the staff members in the Office of Institutional Philanthropy and Strategic Initiatives

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in a field such as English, communications, journalism, business, politics or the humanities. Advanced Degree preferred in a field such as Non-profit administration, English, marketing, communications, business or journalism preferred.
EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate will have 7-10 years related experience in fund raising, grant administration or a related field with at least 5 years’ experience in a previous position that involved extensive writing and editing. Demonstrated successful grant writing experience preferred. Experience with fundraising software (Raiser’s Edge), and institutional research desirable.
LICENSES: A valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

- Excellent communication skills and ability to gather and synthesize information from various College departments.

- Ability to interface professionally with administrators, faculty, and donors. Must be able to interact with donors in a way that reflects positively upon the college. Must be sensitive to donors’ interests and possess a thorough understanding of the development process.
- Internally, must be able to communicate with the academic community, and with colleagues in a cooperative environment.
- Excellent organizational skills, an ability to work independently with minimal direction, and an ability to work well with others.
- Proficiency in use of database and word processing systems. Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge desirable.
- Excellent research skills.
- Results-oriented managerial skills in combination with rigorous planning skills, as well as the ability to bring gift solicitations and proposals to successful closure.
- Ability to travel 10-20% of time.
REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required. Ability to travel 10-20% of time will be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or department.
CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS: This is a full-time, 12 month, exempt level position. This position is benefits-eligible.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Light (up to 20 lbs.)
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This position will supervise the staff members working in the Office of Strategic Priorities and Institutional Philanthropy.
