Position Description:
The Institute on Inequality and Democracy at the Luskin School of Public Affairs seeks a dynamic creative professional to serve as its Program Manager as it expands its research projects, consolidates relationships with community organizations and policy advocacy networks, and supports faculty and graduate student scholarship through research funding and dissemination. We seek this reclassification as we also begin a search for a new Deputy Director and restructure the various duties and responsibilities across the key staff positions of the Institute.

Under the direction of the Institute's Faculty Director, the Program Manager will a) manage the Institute's research grants and associated budgets, b) manage the Institute's RFP processes including the allocation of research and community engagement grants to UCLA faculty and graduate student working groups, c) manage the Institute's Activist-in-Residence program, and c) conceptualize and implement the Institute's public programs and related communications activities. This will include working in close partnership with fund managers at the Luskin School of Public Affairs and OCGA to manage federal grants such as the Institute's recent National Science Foundation Research Coordination Network award and pending Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada Partnership Development Grant.

In relation to such project management and budget administration, the Program Manager will supervise graduate student researchers hired on such grants and will work with the Faculty Director to ensure that research and research dissemination priorities are met in timely fashion. The Program Manager will also coordinate activities, such as those related to the Activist-in-Residence program with other campus units and partners.

The Program Manager will also execute the public programs and communications strategy of the Institute including the annual research event and other academic and public-facing events. Event duties include managing event budgets; seeking opportunities for co-sponsorships with campus and external partners; coordinating with venue and vendors; designing event materials; preparing internal event briefs; making travel arrangements; setting up and coordinating a registration system to capture contact information for community partnership development; evaluating events, capturing feedback and incorporating improvement. In such work, the Program Manager will supervise student workers and temporary event support staff in order to create original research and public scholarship content for distribution through Institute-controlled media and web portals, devise and execute strategies to engage new and existing audiences through events and social media; supporting communications planning and coordination of special events and other activities; writing and editing original copy in coordination with student writers; and researching and pitching stories about projects and to media.

The incumbent must have strong project management and budget administration skills. S/he must have demonstrated experience with large and complex academic and public-facing events. S/he must be a sophisticated written and verbal communicator with substantial experience working with diverse groups?including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty members, university administrators, elected officials, civic leaders, social movements, and other community representatives. S/he must have intimate knowledge of web and social media tools and exhibit creativity with new media technologies and methods. Deep knowledge of Microsoft and publication design software is preferred.
