Job Description Summary

Cuesta College is located in the heart of scenic San Luis Obispo County, and is ranked by as a top five California community college for 2016. Cuesta College has a rich history of educating San Luis Obispo County residents since 1963. Cuesta College serves more than 10,000 students with an increasingly diverse student body of 55% White, 32% Latinx, 5% Mixed Race, 3% Asian/PI, 2% African-American. Courses are offered online and at three physical sites; the main campus in San Luis Obispo, the North County Campus in Paso Robles, and the South County Center in Arroyo Grande. Cuesta College offers 77 degrees and 64 certificates, including 30 Associate Degrees for Transfers to the Cal State University system with several more transfer degrees under development. The college boasts robust Allied Health and Career Technical Education programs and consistently sends students to compete at the national level in areas such as welding, automotive, public speaking, and more. The college's music ensembles are often in the spotlight, winning an award recently from Downbeat magazine and regularly performing at state, national, and international festivals. In addition, Cuesta's theatre program consistently wins national and international awards from the Kennedy Center.

Cuesta College has 139 full-time faculty, 543 adjunct faculty, 234 classified staff, and 41 managers and administrators. Thanks to a $275 million bond measure approved by the voters of San Luis Obispo County in 2014, Cuesta College is repairing aging facilities, updating classrooms, equipment, and technology, and improving programs. Our growing North County Campus opened a new Campus Center in Spring of 2018 and houses a new Veterans Center, EOPS Center/CalWorks/Foster Youth Center, Disabled Student Program and Services (DSPS) office and Student Cultural Lounge. Cuesta will be opening a Dream Center to support undocumented students on both the San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles campuses in Spring of 2019.

Under the general supervision of the Dean of Workforce and Economic Development and in collaboration with the Engineering and Technology Division Chair, provide technical assistance, shop maintenance, department vehicle repair and equipment maintenance in support of the Automotive programs; and perform other related duties as required within the Automotive Department.

This class is distinguished from other Laboratory Technician classes in that incumbents are required to be knowledgeable in the automotive technology areas and in the use of automotive related equipment and the ability to maintain related equipment and materials.

Incumbents in this position promote student learning outcomes, and NATEF and I-CAR support by ensuring that instructional labs are maintained and furnished with equipment and tools that assist the students.

Essential Functions & Qualifications
  • Perform automotive shop maintenance, support and repairs;
  • Assist with development of department budget, as required;
  • Maintain equipment logs;
  • Order and maintain adequate instructional supplies for the department and maintain inventories as necessary to support student success;
  • Inspect Automotive labs to be consistent with student activities and supervise installation of new and old equipment;
  • Estimate the scope and cost of work assignments and select and order necessary tools and materials to complete job(s) while keeping within budget;
  • Maintain and verify safe operation of department hand and power tools; ensure laboratories, supply rooms, lecture/demonstration areas, and any special purpose areas are maintained in an orderly and neat manner;
  • Design, construct, assemble, adjust, test, and clean equipment and apparatus used in laboratory setting for experiments, demonstrations and special projects; Repair and calibrate complex instruments and equipment;
  • Inspect, identify, and report unsafe facilities or equipment in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Operate forklifts, cranes, hoists and other equipment; and
  • Perform other related duties as required in the Automotive Technology department.
  • Equivalent to graduation from the twelfth grade.
  • Completion of Automotive Apprenticeship vocational training program or equivalent.
  • Associate degree in Automotive Technology.
  • Two years of journeyman-level experience in automotive trade.
  • Experience in automotive repair; ASE and/or I-CAR certifications.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Journeyman level experience in automotive may be substituted for college requirements on a year-for-year basis.
Knowledge of:
  • Working knowledge of Automotive Technology, ASE/I-CAR Certification, and auto repair;
  • Material Safety Data Sheets;
  • Safe working practices.
  • Tools, materials, methods, and terminology used in the Automotive Technology areas;
  • Methods and practices used in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment;
  • Safe working practices;
  • Hazardous Communications Regulations - "Right to Know";
  • Fire Prevention, codes, and extinguishers;
  • CPR and First Aid;
  • Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software;
  • Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; and
  • District policies and procedures.
Ability to:
  • Prioritize and work independently on a variety of assignments;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties; and
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.
Physical ability to:
  • Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;
  • Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email;
  • Work at heights;
  • Ascend and descend ladder;
  • Bend and twist, push and pull, stoop, kneel, crawl;
  • Reach in all directions;
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time;
  • Lift 100 pounds and/or carry 50 pounds; and
  • Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.
License and Certificates (current within the last year or must be continuously current):
  • Valid Forklift Certification or the ability to acquire certificate before operating a forklift;
  • Valid driver's license and eligible to obtain California driver's license upon hire.
  • CPR and First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.

Additional Information
The primary work location will be on our San Luis Obispo Campus. There may be times that traveling to other campus locations within the San Luis Obispo County will be required.
