The Department of Theatre and Dance of Bucknell University invites applications for a one-semester Visiting Assistant Professor in Theatre History, Acting, and Directing to begin January 2020. The candidate should be a student-centered teacher-scholar-artist who will support diversity, inclusion, and a liberal arts mission.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will hold a PhD Theatre and demonstrate experience in directing at the undergraduate level, commitment to undergraduate teaching, and strong evidence of work as a collaborator and a mentor with excellent communication skills. Candidates who are ABD will be considered. Other qualifications include commitment to the liberal arts tradition as well as professional theatre experience.

Teaching and Production Responsibilities: We seek a culturally competent theatre educator to teach two courses and direct a production in the artistic season. The courses will include Theatre History II and Acting I. All courses are taught with an emphasis on performance practice. The production will be drawn from a shortlist of three pre-selected contemporary plays.

Other responsibilities: Additional mentorship of student directing and/or dramaturgy projects may be required. Faculty members participate fully in department meetings and will be expected to contribute to the arts community at Bucknell.

Scholarship: We welcome candidates with a broad range of scholarly interests and specializations. Candidates should be able to speak to how their research agenda informs their teaching directing work. Directing productions on campus are considered primary scholarship.

The Community

Located in central Pennsylvania, Lewisburg features a variety of restaurants, beautiful Victorian homes, the restored art deco Campus Theatre (owned by the University), charming shops and boutiques, and the Barnes and Noble at Bucknell University Bookstore. About 33,000 residents live in the region.

The city of Williamsport is about a 30-minute drive from campus, and Penn State University’s main campus is about an hour away, as is Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s state capital. Bucknell is about three hours from New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
