Nature of Work

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is designed to directly support students by regularly helping them learn course material, prepare for tests, and learn effective study strategies. SI provides support to students in high-risk classes, which promotes increased passing grades and reduced course withdrawals. SI data provides evidence that the program is an important component in retaining students. SI is designed to help students master material in high-risk courses while increasing their learning strategies and study skills. Student performance is improved by combining “what to learn” with “how to learn.”
The Supplemental Instruction Leader attends every class he/she is assigned to and conducts at least two SI sessions during the week. The SI Leader is also responsible for planning, coordinating and conducting the sessions as well as collecting and recording all data pertinent to program evaluation. The SI Leader models an exemplary student and ensures all students actively participate in class.
This is a 19.5 hours per week, part-time staff position which may include tutoring hours. The schedule for the person in this position will be assigned by the supervisor. The schedule is subject to change between semesters or as needed. The Supplemental Instruction Leader is directly supervised by the Coordinator of Academic Services.

Essential Duties

Attend all class sessions.
Plan and conduct at least two SI sessions during the week
Communicate with the professor & students about SI sessions
Incorporate collaborative and active learning & teaching methods.
Collect and record qualitative and quantitative data from each session
Administer mid-term and end-of-semester evaluations.
Model an exemplary student
Attend mandatory meetings and training workshops
Ability to interact positively with a diverse student population

Minimum Qualifications and Training

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty and students
Dependable, reliable and able to work with confidential information
A written letter of recommendation
Excellent customer service skills
Must have 60 hours of College credit

Preferred Qualifications and Training

Bachelor’s Degree
Demonstrate effective study strategies
Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge and experience of various teaching and learning styles
