Deputy Director

Office of International Programs

Brown University | Providence, Rhode Island

Job Description:

Reporting to the Director, the Deputy Director is responsible for managing the internal operations and staff of the Office of International Programs.  Responsibilities include oversight of office operations, policies and procedures, communication outreach, and recruitment/enrollment management of students for a very complex set of Brown/CASA programs in 13 countries and Brown-approved programs in 75 countries.   The Deputy Director will build strategic, collaborative relationships with faculty, staff and other partners across Brown University in support of approximately 1100 students who visit the OIP each year and approximately 500 students who study abroad each year. Working closely with a team of study abroad professionals, the Deputy Director develops strategies aimed at enhancing study abroad access to students across concentrations, and across student identities, targeting and, where possible, eliminating barriers to participation.  In collaboration with the Assistant Director, Program Management, the Deputy Director reviews, as necessary, existing student advising and support mechanisms to ensure that students are well-informed about study abroad policies and procedures.

The Deputy Director leads the communications outreach for all Brown/CASA study abroad programs and develops effective strategies to recruit Brown and non-Brown students, informed by current data on study abroad participation at Brown, and a broader understanding of the trends, research and practice in international education.  This position will cultivate and expand upon Brown’s existing relationships with select sending schools, built on an understanding of and appreciation for Brown’s signature initiatives in education abroad. At the direction of the OIP Director, the Deputy Director will also be involved with the assessment and monitoring of existing Brown/CASA programs, and the development of new OIP-spearheaded initiatives around the world.

This position will engage directly in the daily operations of Brown programming abroad and will require the ability to effectively lead a team of education abroad professionals, ensuring transparency and accountability.  The ideal candidate is someone who is detail-oriented, can work both independently and collaboratively, and who has the initiative and creativity to develop and effectively manage new initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree required (PhD preferred)
  • A thorough understanding of the international dimensions to liberal learning
  • An established record of progressively responsible leadership positions (10+ years preferred) with demonstrated active engagement with the education abroad field through presentations, panels and/or professional papers, and/or advisory board service
  • Demonstrated experience in operations management
  • Familiarity with the recruitment and marketing dimensions of education abroad a plus
  • Ability to address stressful situations using tact and diplomacy
  • Familiarity with Horizons database/applications systems preferred
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills
  • Extensive experience living/working overseas in a cross-cultural setting preferred.  Working knowledge of at least one language other than English preferred
  • International travel is required
  • This position requires a strong commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion
