The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking an exceptional clinical leader to join the Department of Internal Medicine as Residency Program Director. Successful applicants will be eligible for appointment at the late-Assistant, Associate or Professor level and should have significant expertise in medical education within an academic medical center. All internal medicine specialties will be considered for the role.

The Dell Medical School enrolled its first class of 50 undergraduate medical students in June of 2016. As part of The University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation’s leading research universities, the Dell Medical School will pursue innovation in the re-design of healthcare delivery, excellence in healthcare research, and programs in interdisciplinary and inter-professional education.

Dell Medical School (DMS) is the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities. The Program Director will lead a large internal medicine residency program, which consists of the following tracks and designations:

  • Categorical IM Track
  • Primary Care Track (VA-based)
  • Distinction Track
  • Preliminary Internship in Internal Medicine

The Program Director is primarily responsible for:

  • Programmatic operations, including but not limited to the recruitment, selection, instruction, supervision, advising, evaluation, documentation, and advancement of residents
  • Oversight for the selection and evaluation of program faculty
  • Developing faculty as educators
  • Integration of the program with ambulatory practices and hospital clinical services in a manner that enhances value and quality, and that promotes optimal environment for professional practice and medical education
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with educational partners in the community
  • Ensures continuing accreditation of the program through application of ACGME common and specialty requirements
  • Ensure compliance with institutional and program-based policies and procedures
  • Ensures communication and participation with medical school education leadership
  • Provision of thought leadership, organization and operation of the general administration of the residency program
  • Developing and leading the team of associate program directors, key clinical faculty, staff, and chief residents
  • Development and successful execution of the strategic direction of the program
  • Commitment to attend national meetings to enhance skills and participation in the development of graduate medical education at the national level

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Five years of progressive experience as an active faculty member of an IM residency program
  • Three years of graduate medical education administrative experience
  • Current certification in the specialty by the American Board of Internal Medicine
  • Eligibility for unrestricted medical licensure in the state of Texas
  • Academic work that qualifies the candidate for appointment as late-Assistant, Associate or Professor

Preferred Qualifications: the strongly preferred candidate for the position will have the following qualifications:

  • Previous experience as an Associate Program Director or Program Director
  • Demonstrated leadership in curriculum development, evaluation methodology, teaching, and mentoring residents
  • Demonstrated excellence in an overall mix of skills including clinical care, clinical teaching, and scholarly activity that advance clinical medicine and institutional service
  • History of educational scholarship
