Position Description - Lehigh University is seeking a senior level faculty member to become the Director of the Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems (ATLSS) Engineering Research Center. The ATLSS Center was one of the first centers awarded by the NSF Engineering Research Centers (ERC) program. ATLSS graduated from the NSF ERC program in 1997 and operates as a self-sustaining research center within Lehigh’s Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, reporting to the Interdisciplinary Research Institute for Cyber Physical Infrastructure and Energy.
The ATLSS Center is an internationally-recognized research center focused on the performance of infrastructure, with emphasis on large-structural systems. ATLSS has performed funded-research for the NSF, US DoT, US DoD, US DoE, and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as well as numerous other government agencies, private companies, and industry-wide organizations. Large-scale experiments are an important feature of ATLSS, and its laboratories are a unique national resource. From 2004 through 2014, ATLSS housed the real-time multi-directional (RTMD) earthquake simulation facility, one of 14 laboratories within the NSF’s Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES). Currently, ATLSS houses the NHERI Lehigh Experimental Facility, one of eight national laboratory facilities within NSF’s Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) program. The NEES-RTMD facility and the NHERI Lehigh facility have enabled researchers from across the US to use ATLSS laboratory resources. In addition, ATLSS researchers are well known for research in areas such as durable and sustainable infrastructure, monitoring and assessment of infrastructure, infrastructure that is resilient to natural and other hazards, and life-cycle infrastructure engineering. Total expenditures at the ATLSS Center over the past 18 years exceed $120M.
To be fully considered for the position of ATLSS Center Director, applicants must have: a PhD degree with a specialization in the field of structural engineering; the rank of Professor, or the rank of Associate Professor with five years at the rank of Associate Professor at a research university, or equivalent experience; the ATLSS Center embodies faculty with distinguished records of publications in highly-ranked journals in civil engineering, structural engineering, and/or infrastructure engineering; our faculty also have a distinguished record of mentoring graduate students; outstanding records of research funding from various sources; a solid record of effective teaching and university service, as well as service to professional organizations; demonstrated experience in large-scale structural testing; demonstrated experience working within multi-university research teams; demonstrated experience leading large, multi-disciplinary research teams; and/or a strong record of research funding from industrial groups and demonstrated experience in academic leadership, such as department chair or associate chair, and related experience with supervising staff.
The responsibilities of ATLSS Center Director include: providing broad leadership that determines strategic directions and day-to-day operations of the center; providing support for research teams, as well as individual faculty and staff, pursuing a variety of research funding opportunities; developing research funding with emphasis on programs that utilize laboratory resources; working with staff on scheduling of resources and facilities, and budgeting and financial planning; directly or indirectly supervising approximately 20 research scientists, and technical and support staff; maintaining a supportive environment for approximately 30 graduate students and visiting researchers; maintaining synergistic relationships with academic departments and research institutes within Lehigh; building and maintaining relationships with external entities from government, industry, professional organizations, and academia; and maintaining a broad portfolio of research projects in areas such as transportation infrastructure, defense infrastructure, energy infrastructure, and natural hazards engineering. The ATLSS Center Director is required to be engaged in undergraduate and graduate teaching, in addition to building and leading a team of graduate students in research.
