Chief of Staff - Office of Advancement

The Office of Advancement supports the mission of Georgetown University, its faculty, and students by developing relationships with key constituencies, connecting with alumni, and working with donors to help them know and understand opportunities for partnership with the university.

The Chief of Staff (COS) to the Vice President of Advancement (VP) is a key, strategic role that advances Georgetown University's fundraising, alumni engagement, donor relations, annual giving, communications, and other activities. This role directs and accelerates the work of the VP, interacts with Senior Leadership of Georgetown University, and strengthens critical relationships with other departments across the University. The COS will execute and implement special projects for the VP and the Office of Advancement in support of our fundraising goals.

In this capacity, the Director of Development is responsible for managing the Office of the VP, partnering with the VP and the Executive Leadership team to implement strategies for the Office of Advancement, assist with the VP's Office communications, perform research and writing tasks, as well as drafting and editing official letters and other internal and external documents. This position requires the ability to articulate the mission, vision, values, and fundraising priorities to a broad number of stakeholders and constituents.

The COS is supervised by and will collaborate closely with the VP in the management of the VP's Office. Additionally, the COS manages the Special Assistant to the VP and prioritizes her or his work. The COS collaborates with members of the Executive Leadership team for the Office of Advancement and partners with Senior University Leadership, faculty, students, and key volunteer leaders to ensure the timely delivery of critical materials to the VP for review and approval.

The Chief of Staff will have duties that include, but are not limited to the following:

Management
  • Directs the workflow of the Office of the Vice President.
  • Advances office-wide priorities.
  • Coordinates information flow within the Office of Advancement.
  • Facilitates communication from the VP to external stakeholders.
  • Assists the VP with his portfolio of donors/prospective donors.
  • Orchestrates the management of the VP's critical work product.
  • Ensures work of the Office of the VP is aligned with the strategic priorities of the Office of Advancement.

Special Projects and Miscellaneous Responsibilities
  • Leads or provides support for special projects for the Office of the VP for Advancement and/or the Chief Operating Officer.
  • Serves in leadership or supporting roles on various University initiatives.
  • Builds connections within the Office of Advancement, as well as other University departments and offices.
  • Convenes meetings on behalf of the VP for Advancement to advance projects and initiatives.

Outreach
  • Communicates with internal and external stakeholders (including key members of Georgetown to include donors, volunteers, the Board of Directors, and University leadership).
  • Provides appropriate and timely updates regarding the progress of various University initiatives.
  • Serve as the Vice President's liaison to local and national organizations and associations, including university alumni.

Writing and Research
  • Writes and researches tasks, including drafting memos and letters, and editing speeches.
  • Performs research for presentations and projects.
  • Helps manage research-related inquiries from the Office of the President.
  • Edits content for OA-wide communications as appropriate.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience
  • The ideal candidate will have familiarity with Advancement and fundraising in a higher education setting
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and highly developed interpersonal interaction skills to include the ability to exchange and interpret information to influence others
  • The ability to communicate and conduct business with the utmost poise and professionalism
  • Strong organization and project management skills as well as attention to detail
  • The ability to work independently, proactively, and demonstrate sound strategic judgment
  • Ability to act, behave, and manage with discretion confidential material and matters
  • Flexibility, efficiency, and the ability to interpret and react immediately in pressure situations
  • Strong computer skills required including all Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Must have strong knowledge of Georgetown University and demonstrated commitment to education preferred
