Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of the Office of Community Standards, the Assistant Director assists in the daily operation and functioning of the office. The Assistant Director serves as an administrative hearing officer, an investigator for student and student group/organization misconduct, advises hearing boards, and oversees the reporting of federal crime data in conjunction with the Miami University Police Department. In partnership with another Assistant Director, responsibilities could include: recruitment and training of University hearing officers and board members, utilization and management of the student conduct database, the administration of a comprehensive assessment plan for the student conduct process and the development and implementation of an alternative dispute resolution program. This position works closely with students, faculty, staff, administrators, Miami University Police, and local police agencies.

Job Duties

  • Assist in the day to day operations of the university student conduct system.
  • Assist in the development of administrative protocols and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal laws and mandates, including Clery, Title IX, and Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
  • Serve as a university hearing officer, including reviewing, investigating, adjudicating, and managing conduct cases, including those related to sexual misconduct, sex/gender based harassment, relationship violence, or other threats to the safety or well-being of the campus community. 
  • Help create a process for, and serve as a facilitator within, an alternative dispute resolution process, engaging students in the process of developing resolution agreements and determining developmental outcomes.*
  • Assist with coordinating and facilitating the recruitment and training of University Hearing Officers, including the development and application of the training curriculum, ongoing training sessions, and the creation of standard operating procedures.
  • Serves as a liaison to the Office of Residence Life via the coordination of trainings for all residential conduct hearing officers, and act as a resource for process questions from the staff as they investigate and adjudicate alleged misconduct.
  • Work in collaboration with staff in Student Activities and the Cliff Alexander Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life staff to oversee investigations involving recognized student organizations. 
  • Assist in the creation and assessment of annual learning outcomes and program goals; prepare and distribute various monthly, quarterly, and annual statistical reports.
  • Work collaboratively to create and present educational programs, including online programs and programs designed to increase community awareness of and adherence to university policies; design and facilitate training for students, faculty, staff and conduct board members. 
  • Assist in the supervision of classified and unclassified staff, graduate, and practicum students, and student employees.
  • Serve on various committees at the divisional and/or university level. 
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as dictated by student needs, divisional, and organizational priorities.
  • These job requirements will each be divided between the two assistant directors in the Office of Community Standards. Assignments will be made once candidates are hired and will be based on skills and experience.

Minimum Requirements

  • By position start date, earned Master’s or terminal degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field plus one academic year (8-10 months) of graduate or professional experience in student conduct or related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current issues in the field of student conduct, applicable legal issues, and promising practices related to student conduct.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate high ethical practice and discretion when working with sensitive, confidential information.
