School/Center Overview

The Penn Libraries serve the world-class faculty and students of Penn’s 12 schools. The Libraries’ collections comprise more than 7 million volumes, over 100,000 journals, some 2 million digitized images, and extraordinary rare and unique materials that document the intellectual and cultural experience of ancient and modern civilizations. Through our collaborative relationships, we supplement Penn’s great local collections with physical access to the Center for Research Libraries (approximately 5 million items), the combined holdings of the Ivies (more than 70 million volumes), and exclusive electronic access to some 2 million public domain titles in the HathiTrust. Today, the Libraries play an instrumental role in developing new technologies for information discovery and dissemination and are noted for groundbreaking work in digital library design. Duties

Reporting to the Director of Strategic Communications, the Communications Coordinator plays a key role in raising the visibility of the Penn Libraries, its services, resources, and expertise, and ensuring the Libraries’ positive reputation. The Coordinator will track and gather information on Libraries events, exhibits, partnerships, etc., and make recommendations for external communications follow-up. She or he will manage planning, monitoring, and daily posting to the Libraries’ institutional social media channels and write copy for blog posts, newsletters, email blasts and other communications materials. The Coordinator will assist with media relations by drafting and distributing press releases and fulfilling media/photo requests. She or he will design and/or guide staff in designing and producing print and digital collateral, while ensuring proper branding. Ultimately the Coordinator will support the Libraries’ staff to ensure they have the tools and content to communicate efficiently and effectively with Penn students, scholars, researchers, faculty, staff and the public at large.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Professional experience with written and visual communication and social medial strongly preferred. Excellent writing competency required. Strong familiarity with social media platforms, and a drive to stay current with online communications trends essential. Experience with graphic design and brand management preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with a wide range of staff, under limited supervision. Demonstrated ability to work with short deadlines, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and clearly communicate both tasks accomplished and future needs to supervisor and team members. Experience in an academic institution, research library, or cultural organization desirable. Advanced computer skills, including direct experience with photo and graphic design software and digital asset management platforms strongly preferred.
