Reporting to the Chair of Comparative Medicine and to the Senior Associate Dean, Finance & Administration for the School, the Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) serves as the key business leader for the Department of Comparative Medicine which oversees the Veterinary Service Center (VSC), a key center of experimental medicine in translational and biomedical research. In this role, the Director of Finance and Administration partners with the chair and other faculty to manage the financial and administrative affairs of a university-wide research center whose stakeholders include more than 2500 principal investigators, research scientists, post-doctoral fellows, and students in pursuit of their important research aims.
Due to the large and varied stakeholder population, the Director of Finance and Administration will need to have a comprehensive grasp of the finances, as well as the ability to communicate complex financial information to a sophisticated audience. Additionally, the Director of Finance and Administration will lead improvements in business and operations within the department, and foster an environment that delivers excellent services through large teams of non-exempt staff, and over 50 non-academic research and administrative staff.
Lead finance and administration operations for School of Medicine's Department of Comparative Medicine. Manage staff to achieve the School of Medicine mission, goals and objectives in the areas of research and teaching; and ensure compliance in all areas. The duties of this position are typically split between 50% operational and 50% strategic.
CORE DUTIES*:Establish business and administrative mission and goals. Partner with faculty leadership on departmental affairs and advocate the unit's needs and goals to internal and external parties. Evaluate business processes and operational and/or financial effectiveness. Develop long-range business plans, and multi-year financial forecasts. Independently initiate and create strategic plans for organization or program(s) managed. Make recommendations that may impact the unit's academic and research capabilities. Identify and resolve strategic issues of substantial significance that affect the overall functioning beyond the immediate unit, consult and advise senior leadership. Oversee allocation of all resources. Manage the direction of internal academic and administrative policy development for programs and administrative operations. Make recommendations for changes in staffing, facilities, health and safety compliance, finance, technology and/or administrative functions. Work with the Chair and /or Dean's Office regarding resources to support activities and interests. Ensure the financial success of the organization. Oversee and/or manage the finances across all sources for the annual budget cycle, including developing, monitoring, analyzing forecasting and reporting. Recommend and develop strategies for general cost containment, strategic investments, and growth management. Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the organization. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees. May independently or in collaboration with human resources managers, guide supervisors in the interpretation and implementation of human resources policies, procedures and programs for hourly as well as exempt level staff. May oversee managerial-level staff and Assistant DFA in the management of all student, fellow, residency related activities and graduate program administration. Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with academic and administrative policies and procedures within the unit.

- Experience with cost accounting methods in a shared or central services environment
- Experience administering or managing operations and finance at an Academic Medical Center
Education & Experience:
Master's degree (MBA, Health Care Administration, Public health or related field) or combination of education and relevant experience. Five years of progressively responsible managerial experience including financial and budget preparation. Three years of supervisory experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Demonstrated leadership and supervisory, planning and change management skills. Demonstrated experience implementing financial funding concepts and regulatory agency policies and guidelines throughout multiple unit(s). Working knowledge of grants and contract administration. Strong knowledge of industry standards and/or regulatory requirements. Demonstrated ability to identify and analyze all pertinent information/data to make and communicate decisions to meet the unit(s) current and future financial, research, academic and administrative needs. Strong negotiation and effective interpersonal skills. Excellent communication skills. Able to influence people, solve problems, troubleshoot, think creatively and resolve conflicts. Ability to establish a culture of integrity within their unit(s) and with those external to the unit. Demonstrate to others that he/she is direct, truthful and credible. Demonstrated skills as a receptive listener, influential and persuasive and seeks to understand the differing sides of each situation. Makes decisions effectively and decisively. Demonstrated expertise in business and management concepts.
Certifications and Licenses:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks. Frequently sitting. Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds; Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
