Reporting to the Assistant Director of Facilities, this is an Advanced level position for skilled trades professionals including leadership and supervision responsibilities.

An Automotive Mechanic Supervisor performs skilled trades work in the maintenance, and repair of automotive shop and campus fleet services following recognized procedures and techniques of the automotive mechanical trade using hand and power tools; works independently on administrative tasks, serves as the lead skilled trades worker on projects; trains employees in the procedures and techniques of the automotive mechanical trade; is responsible for maintaining fleet records, and purchasing all necessary tools, parts, and equipment for the University’s Automotive Shop which services 130 or more State of Georgia cars and trucks, 80 or more Low Speed Vehicles, Heavy Equipment, and Grounds Maintenance Equipment totaling more than one million dollars in University assets. The Automotive Mechanic Supervisor is fully responsible for the daily operations of the Automotive Shop and Motorpool including directly supervising at least two other automotive mechanics the employees in the shop by assigning daily tasks and correct prioritizing assignments to meet the work demand with available employees. The Automobile Mechanic Supervisor is responsible for recruiting, training, retaining, and evaluating employees.

This position performs automotive services to meet the University’s needs including; preventive maintenance, fleet services, fault diagnosis, repair and replacement of faulty components, detailed inspection, repair of internal combustion engines, services low speed vehicles, and other motorized equipment including four cycle and two cycle grounds and landscaping equipment. The person in this position must maintain accurate records utilizing computer technology for scheduling preventive maintenance, recording service to vehicles, recording repairs, inputting worker’s time, ordering material, and recording work order status.

Must be available as needed to work nights or weekends to service emergency needs of our customers, responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns, and is an essential staff member for University emergency response.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of High school diploma or GED, 8 (eight) years of experience in the automotive mechanical trade field,
OR combination of two years Vocational Trades training and 6 (six) years of field experience in the automotive mechanical trade. A pre-employment drug screen required. A valid driver’s license required. The ability to successfully pass a credit check and background check as required for use of a State of Georgia Purchasing Card.

Must have a practical knowledge of the standard tools, methods, practices of the automotive mechanic’s trade, knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline engines, mechanical repair of trucks, and construction equipment. Must have the ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment and make necessary repairs. Must have the ability to read, interpret, and work from documents, sketches, and diagrams containing safety rules, operating procedures, maintenance instructions, and regulatory manuals. Must be skilled in performing technical tasks, detailed oriented, ability to adapt to the changing needs of the business, preparing and maintaining accurate records; proficient in reading and understanding technical drawings and written work instructions; proficient in understanding and complying with safety regulations and handling hazardous materials in the performance of job duties (i.e. OSHA and EPA).

Must have the ability to follow instructions, coordinate the activities of trade workers and/or service workers. Performs routine tasks individually or in a team setting; adapt to changing work priorities; Able to follow the organization’s established protocol for customer service; deemed as Essential Personnel, must be able to adjust work hours as conditions may dictate, work nights, weekends and to service emergency needs of the university and/or special events.

Must have the skills to effectively communicate through verbal and written format; listen to others and understand their needs; establish and maintain a productive and collaborative professional working relationships. Respond to questions within policy and procedure guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

Education and Training: Diploma or Professional Certificate equivalent to a two-year diploma in Automotive Mechanical Trade or related field. A Master Automotive Technician Certification or more than 1 ASE certification. Proper training and certification under section 609 of the Clean Air Act by an EPA-approved program is preferred.

Experience: Ten (10) years or more years experience in an automotive repair shop in a university, health care, or school maintenance department. Previous experience leading a work team or directing work in a automotive repair shop is preferred.

Skills: Proficient in intermediate computer skills including email, web browser, maintenance software, purchasing software, and mobile devices. The ability to weld using either stick welding or MIG welding techniques.

Knowledge: Knowledgeable in the policies and procedures required by the State of Georgia’s Office of Fleet Management regulations. Able to provide technical assistance to others by troubleshooting complex automotive mechanical issues.

Salary $21.81/hrly - $28.08/hrly (minimum to midpoint) Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. or more. Ability to climb ladders and scaffolds. Must be able to stand, walk, bend/stoop, reach above shoulder level and climb stairs. Ability to perform strenuous manual tasks. Ability to access confined spaces and work in open areas such as roof tops, etc.
