Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, with occasional weekends.
During the academic semesters, two weekdays at 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and three weekdays at 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a one hour lunch or dinner break.

The Visual Arts Studio Manager/Chief Preparator manages the daily operations of the department’s art studios and fabrication lab. S/he supervises and maintains all machinery, and instructs other users on safety and proper protocols while collaboratively supporting a wide variety of creative projects. Additionally, this position oversees the installation/de-installation of the department’s exhibitions and ensures that artwork handling is held to industry standard.

Education Required Bachelor's Degree Major/Discipline

In the arts or a related field.

Education Preferred

BA or higher in studio art, art education, or art conservation/preservation.

Experience Required 3 years Type of Experience

Experience in a maker space facility, art exhibition space shop, or construction fabrication shop and experience instructing others in the use of power tools and welding techniques.

License/Certification Required

Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years.

License/Certification Preferred Skills Required

- Proficiency with applicable specialized software, equipment, tools, machinery and materials
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Inventory and scheduling experience
- Strong organizing and time management skills
- Prior experience and knowledge in safety protocols and maintenance of specialized lab equipment
- Ability to work independently with a wide range of faculty, staff, students and visitors
- Ability to use, train, maintain, and troubleshoot shop equipment
- Metal working (variety of welding techniques), wood working (use of bandsaw, table saw, belt sander), and fabrication techniques
- Hands-on experience and training in industry-standard art preparations, installation and art handling practices

Skills Preferred

- Ability to learn fabrication technology through manufacturer’s training and research (CNC mill, 3D printers, laser cutters)
- Passion for learning new skills and desire to teach them to others

Internal / External Contacts

Must work effectively with department faculty, staff and students as well as physical plant and maintenance personnel. This position will coordinate projects with campus police in matters of loading and off-loading shop materials and equipment.

Physical Demands

This position request heavy lifting (50 lbs), climbing stairs and ladders, walking and operation of power and welding equipment.

One floor of the department is not accessible by elevator; therefore supplies and equipment delivered to those areas of the department must be physically carried up stairs.

Work may occur indoors or outdoors.

Working Conditions

Flexible work schedule. Evening shifts routinely required to accommodate for night class. Occasional weekend work; especially during busy periods.

This position will work in a shop setting. However, because of machines and equipment, physical safety is a priority concern. Must have the ability, initiative, and energy to lift heavy objects as well as wood and metal construction materials. The position is responsible for the clean and safe operation of the woodshop and labs, and therefore will be asked to clean the areas and sweep floors as needed. Noise, wood, dust, paint, and paint thinner fumes must be dealt with in a safe and efficient manner.
