The Mills College Lesson Study group is seeking a Research Associate to contribute to one of the Lesson Study research projects. The project is an Institute of Educational Sciences (IES) Randomized Control Trial designed to test resource kits for fractions lesson study. The purpose of this efficacy study is to test the independent and combined impacts of lesson study and a fractions resource kit, developed and pilot tested with prior IES funding (https://ies.ed.gov/funding/grantsearch/details.asp?ID=520).
The Research Associate will work with a team led by Catherine Lewis, Ph.D. on the data coding, analysis, synthesis and development of written, video and on-line products, specifically those related to how teachers learn during lesson study.
Specific duties of the Research Associate include, but are not limited to the following (percentages are approximate and will vary over time):
Development of Coding Systems and Data Coding (50%)
Work under direction of Senior Research Associate to design, develop and test coding systems, code data, including video data, surveys, and lesson study artifacts. Enter data into computer files. Work with other team members to achieve reliable coding of data and conduct intermittent checks.
Data Analysis (20%)
Analyze data results against theories of teacher learning and research questions. Write up research findings.
Synthesizing findings and reporting (25%)
This will include meetings with other team members and expert consultants to plan and discuss data coding, analysis and emerging findings. Time will be given for the development of written, video and on-line products.
Conference/Professional Meeting Presentations (5%)
Opportunities will be provided for conference and professional meeting presentations.
The ideal candidate will have:
The work will require strong organizational skills to keep track of electronic and hard-copy documentation and strong verbal and written communication skills for working with widely-varying educational agencies. Attention to detail is required for all facets of the job, including coding and analyzing data. The Research Associate will use multiple qualitative (e.g., Studiocode) and quantitative analysis software systems to do this work and must have strong listening and collaborative abilities to support the development of shared and complex protocols and coding systems. Curiosity about teaching and learning and a desire to develop research skills will be important assets.
Education and Training:
Candidates must possess a Bachelors or Masters Degree and have experience with some components of research, preferably related to educational evaluation, educational measurement, educational policy, or a related discipline (e.g., Statistics, Program Evaluation, Psychology, Sociology).
Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands:
Candidates must understand that this work will require sitting at a desk, working independently and visiting school sites or conferences. Some current project offices are on the second floor of a building, only accessible by stairs. Small amounts of car and plane travel (both locally and nationally) may be necessary.
This is a full-time, exempt position with an FTE of 1.0. Salary is commensurate with experience, and includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with college-matching after 6 month qualifying period, 10 days of vacation for year one, 15 days of vacation for years 2-10, and 22 days of vacation years 10+ plus, 12 sick days and 17 paid holidays (subject to annual review).
