Job Details

Hofstra University School of Law, located in Hempstead, NY, is seeking to hire a Visiting Clinical Professor or Visiting Associate Clinical Professor (“Clinical Professor”) to direct our Deportation Defense Clinic (“DDC”).

The Deportation Defense Clinic was established at Hofstra after the 2016 presidential to protect those immigrants on Long Island who are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of increased deportation enforcement, and will conduct that work in a number of ways. The Clinical Professor supervises law students in the representation of individuals at high risk of deportation, such as those with removal orders or those losing status due to new federal policies.  The DDC engages in impact litigation and collaborates with existing community organizations and networks on non-litigation community lawyering projects in support of Long Island's immigrant communities. These projects aim to tackle the systemic issues often impossible to address through individual-client litigation. The Clinical Professor will be responsible for all aspects of running the DDC, including: planning and teaching the course seminar that accompanies the DDC, client selection, supervision and mentoring of law students in representing clients and community advocacy, clinic administration, and community education and outreach.

The Hofstra Law Clinic, where the DDC is housed, was established in 1973 and is an integral part of the Law School.  The Law School has several additional clinical offerings, including three that also work with immigrant populations: Asylum, Immigration, and Youth Advocacy.

The Law School seeks an applicant who has a demonstrated commitment to immigration law and a minimum of five years’ experience in the field. Spanish fluency and some teaching or supervisory experience are highly desirable. Additional foreign language proficiency is also beneficial.

Salary will be $90,000 per year plus benefits, and title will be commensurate with experience. The position is available immediately.

To apply:  Please submit a letter of interest with a CV, and a list of references via email only to Yvonne Atkinson at LawSchoolFacultyJobs@hofstra.edu. Please include “Visiting Clinical Professor or Visiting Associate Clinical Professor, Deportation Defense Clinic” in the subject line. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Hofstra University is an equal opportunity employer, committed to fostering diversity in its faculty, administrative staff and student body, and encourages applications from the entire spectrum of a diverse community.
