Job description

Savannah State University seeks qualified applicants for the Dean of the College of Sciences & Technology.  This position manages seven departments including two master’s degrees (Marine Sciences & Mathematics) and undergraduate degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science, Marine Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Civil Engineering Technology, Computer Science Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology; the Departments of Naval Science (Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps) and Military Science (Army Reserve Officer Training Corps).  The Dean works with faculty, students, alumni, external supporters and the campus administration to strengthen recruitment and retention of students; enhance financial resources for the College; and encourage innovation, creativity, and the professional growth of the students, faculty and staff.  This position provides leadership in teaching, published research, grantsmanship, student and faculty development, and fundraising.  Responsibilities include management of one of the University’s four academic centers of excellence and support of faculty grantsmanship to retain SSU’s position among the top ten USG institutions in securing grants.  The Dean works in collaboration with the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the College of Business Administration, and the College of Education.  The Dean may be directed to perform job related tasks in support of Savannah State University in addition to those specifically delineated in this description. 

 

An earned doctorate in a STEM discipline and from an accredited institution is required.  Must have professional, scholarly, and educational accomplishments commensurate with an appointment as a tenured faculty member within the discipline. Administrative experience at or above the Department Chair level, Associate Dean, or equivalent also required.  Graduate and undergraduate college teaching experience, scholarship, and professional service achievements commensurate with the rank of professor within discipline appropriate to the College; experience in teaching, published research, grantsmanship, student and faculty development and fundraising desired.  Must have the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and make decisions, with attention to details and deadlines.  Exceptional interpersonal and analytical skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to the principles of higher education are required.  Must have the ability to understand, support and articulate both internally and externally, the centrality of the academic enterprise and SSU’s role as a Historically Black institution.  Background and/or credit check may be required.
