Claremont McKenna College (CMC) invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Director at the Murty Sunak Quantitative and Computing Lab (QCL). This is a full-time, 12-month per year, benefits eligible, exempt staff position that reports to the Director of the QCL under the umbrella of the Dean of Faculty’s Office. In addition to the administrative role as an Assistant/Associate Director, this position will also be placed at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor in Mathematical Sciences, teaching the equivalent of two courses or less in an academic year depending on the needs of the QCL and the academic department.
QCL is the transdisciplinary campus hub and support center for students, faculty and staff seeking assistance with a broad spectrum of quantitative issues, including mathematics, computation, statistics, programming, and data analysis and visualization. The center also supports and facilitates industry data science projects for CMC’s new data science capstone course.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Teach and advise data science capstone projects, Harvey Mudd College CS Clinic projects (as a CMC faculty advisor), or other regular courses under the discretion of the department chair of mathematical sciences and the director of the QCL.
- Manage and develop the QCL services and events such as student mentoring/tutoring, workshops/seminars, one-on-one consultations, meetings and conferences, etc.
- Supervise and advise undergraduate student mentors and graduate fellows working for the center.
- Develop and/or run co-curricular workshops on quantitative and computing methods including, but not limited to, data analysis and visualization, programming, statistical computing, and high-performance computing for students, faculty and staff.
- Consult with faculty on their research projects to provide expert support for mathematical, statistical, analytical and graphing tools and methods.
- Consult with students on senior theses and student research projects.
In addition to this, skills needed for consulting at the QCL include:
- Demonstrated excellence in mentoring undergraduate students in quantitative and computing areas;
- Knowledge of statistics, data science and computer science at least on the level of undergraduate curriculum;
- Fluency with mathematical and statistical software environments, such as R, STATA, MATLAB, and Maple;
- Fluency with programming and scripting languages such as Python, Java, C/C++, and shell script; and
- Familiarity with cloud and high-performance computing environment such as XSEDE supercomputers and GPU systems.
The successful candidate should hold or expect to receive a Ph.D. by August 2019 in either mathematical sciences (broadly defined), computer science, data science, or statistics, and have the highest standards of excellence in teaching. Preference may be given to candidates with expertise in quantitative and computational practices including data science, machine learning, statistics, and closely related areas.

The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required. Travel may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division. This is a 12 month position.
